Is there a difference in blow tubes? If so, which do you like best?

The grooves on the end of the tube prevent the necessary from slipping off accidentally. It's made from lexan polycarbonate , so it's not going to scratch or break easily. |

To your question about differences in blow-tube, definately yes, especially if you want to work larger silks. The late Peter White made a mirrored tube which exchanges 6' silk art for stuffed in smaller silks. And -- with blow-tube, if you have the wind, you can use various diameter tubes to see if your lungs can get bigger than 3 tied together 12 inch silks. Of course this means you also will have to play with the connection gimmicks to find the right match. If you are only doping parlor or caberet, this may not be worth the time and effort for you.

Rcently, I saw line a new version with metal chrome ends, instead of the silver tape, and it was mentioned that it held the gimmicks better from prematurely releasing. I can't remember where I saw it though.

It's a pretty trick. But, I've never seen one "off the shelf" which gives a good presentation. And, I've never seen a "handling" which makes the "move" simple and sure.
I wrote it up in my book. I never used it in my program, but, a young lad whom I was mentoring liked it, and I showed him how to get almost 5 minutes out of it!

Check out Duane Laflin's version at the Laflin magic store. He does a great job with his presentation.

It looks like Laflin Magic is finally back up online . The site was down for several months .
http://www.laflinmagicstore.com/ But the Silk Blow Tube (aka "Crystal Tube" ) listed on the site looks like the standard version that almost every dealer sells. (which is fine ... it gets the job done.) |

Duane and I have been friends since we worked a convention together back in '92. (I "introduced" him to the Demon Wonder Box.)
He does some very fine work with silks, hank balls, TTs etc. I have not seen him present the Crystal Tube, but, I'm sure he would do it well. I was mentoring Jeff Helding (35 years ago)and I worked out a simplified technique for setting the "gimmicks" as the silks are loaded. No fingers get stuck, and the gimmicks are in the 'correct" place! I also developed a presentation that fills a few minutes and "sets up" the audience so that they "believe" that the silks are knotted together at the finish. I don't do it, but, I wrote up the handling in the book.

I do this in almost every show. I use Silly Billy's routine, found in his book "Seriously Silly" (I think that's the name of it). I use diamond cut silks (from Bob Sanders) so they actually look bigger than they are. Now that these are being made in China, it's hard to find one that's crystal clear. They all have a hazy finish. I may purchase one from Smokey Mtn Magic in the future, but right now my Goshman tube keeps on trucking.

In my recently published e-Book "Tricks With a Pop-Away Wand" I describe how to do a variety of silk effects by blowing the silks through your Pop-Away wand, including a 20th Century, a Mis-Made Flag, and a Dye-Version (plus a few extras using the same principle). It's in The Wizards' Journal #29. And YES, you can still use it as a Pop-Away wand!

SAMMY is doing a fine job as editor of the "LINKING RING".
BUT, I don't care for his routine or handling for the "blow tube".

Probably one of the prettiest silk blow routines was Harrison's Liquid Silk Blow. I was fortunate enough to know Mr. Harrison back in the 60's.
His routine was clean and an absolute fooler, audiences loved it. It reminded me of 4th of July every time I saw him perform the silk blow, the audience would "Ohh and Ahh" as each colored silk would appear. Mr. Oslund, I was wondering if you and Glenn ever crossed paths? John

Sorry to say that I was never so fortunate. My pal, Don Lawton, developed a fine routine with Glenn Harrison's trick.

Oops...I should add that the "blow tube" that the OP asked about, is, I believe, the "Cryatal Tube" (TENYO)

Dick Oslund explains his handling of the "Crystal Tube" in his new Book, "Dick Oslund Road Scholar". He teaches you how to build this trick beyond a simple stuff in the silks and blow them out tied. His comments makes a lot of sense. Dick even gives you a couple of bits that will get the audience laughing, and turn this 1 minute trick into several minutes of entertainment.
His new book is gold for those wanting to better themselves and learn now to entertain the masses. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4423 http://www.upstagemagic.com/product/crystal-tube/ |

Thanks Jack! --and, Bill, too!
I wrote up the Crystal Tube in the book. (Pages 273--276) See David Todd's post, above. The Smoky Mountain tube has a "little" improvement (grooves)that help the performer. I like the polycarbonate too. The basic (Tenyo?) prop is fine, but, for long term use, Smoky Mountain's is much better. As I note in the book, this trick won't get you booked on AGT, but, it will add a colorful, clever, and funny few minutes, and, the PROPS (you can't BUY a TRICK!)are very reasonably priced.
