Dear All,
I love tricks that use boxes and I'm currently developing a parlor/cabaret act with the premise that I've collected various "magical artefacts" Several of these are mysterious boxes. I currently use Deans Box, Gravity box and a tea chest. Any other ones that people think work well or can recommend? Please before I get the onslaught of "why do you use boxes they're not everyday objects" save that for another thread. Also I don't just do boxes in my act! Kindest Regards DAK |

Man, oh man! The magic world if FULL of them. BTW, what "Gravity Box" do you use and how do you like it? I understand the current one on the market can only be done on a smooth floor. True?
How about a mirror box? "Jap" box? Tipover box. Crystal silk box. Square circle? There are countless boxes ... And a show with box tricks is not necessarily bad. It's all up the perfomer and what he/she does with them. |

Man I'd had a mental block and forgoten all these;
"How about a mirror box? "Jap" box? Tipover box. Crystal silk box. Square circle? There are countless boxes ... " LOL Gravity box can only be done on smooth floors/surfaces, but hey every trick has it's limitations. I'm particularly looking for boxes that look old, no red and yellow paint! I forgot to mention I have Die box too! Regards DAK |

Don't forget the Nest of Boxes, and some rare ones like The Cabinet of Deodar, The Chest of Wang, and finally the Astro Ball Cabinet.

Your act seems like a natural for some version of the jumbo gozinta boxes. These are large enough to be held up as a story is told. Might be a great opening for a box act. The one I know has the fancy exterior box and a die. I saw, somewhere, a new version of this that has 3 boxes involved.
I use a box to appear a rabbit. Also a box to appear a duck sometimes..other times the regular bucket. I have a box, covered with newspaper, tear apart, for a duck vanish. I have a few that are painted fancy..some reds. But most of the stuff I have made the last few years...unless I want it to have some "special element" like looking like a toy box, is just wood with a bit of darker stain. Looks pretty ordinary. quack |

Mak Magic is the box capital for magic boxes. Here is the address, this will give you an idea of what box tricks are available.
http://www.makmagic.com/ Yes, they are painted brightly, but you can always remake them to your liking. Noone makes boxes that make old looking equipment that I know of. There are some very expensive makers that make natural wood, but these are still finished very nicely. The only problem with box magic is transportation and the amount of luggage required. My next problem was I had to have a table for every box trick. If you have an assistant to bring them on and off stage that is great. Otherwise, your timing will really be affect the audience. If you can overcome these two major drawbacks then box magic is great, you can use exciting music and really have an upbeat act/show. Good luck, |

The best 'box' effect out there, in my humble opinion, has to be Okito's Multim in Parvo. Two boxes are shown completely empty yet three large loads (like ducks) are produced from them. The method is diabolically clever. Nobody makes it anymore, but if you're willing to research and build it yourself, you'll have a winner.

Stevens Magic Emporium has a spirit cabinet built by Collector's Workshop that is about to hit the market that is called "Sheishin No Cabinet" I have one on pre-order so I can't give you a review but if it's from the brain of George @ CW & Joe @ Stevens it will be great.

Many illusions use boxes, like the tip over can be a large human size or table top. Doll house or the Globe theater production as seen on mark Wilson's web site. There are several bunny production boxes I have been considering like Doves to Bunny, Magic Circus Wagon, and other balloon to bunny boxes. And the ever popular Metamorphosis box you can pack your entire parlor act into.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Mel Babcock makes great box based apparatus and the prices are excellent for the value. He released a few months ago a limited edition Nest of 5 Boxes using exotic woods:

Mikame appears to have solved the old "tipover box angle problem" problem by adding hinged sides. To me this seems a near-perfect production box. More load capacity than mirror box, better angles, probably lighter and less breakable as well.

Bunny boxes work well if they are bought but if you are making one it will have to be good

The best box effect I use is Murphy's Chest... I am amazed more magicians do not have this prop it is so clever and versatile !!
If this does not come a collectors item in years to come I will eat my magic wand... especially as they seem to be discontinued... this is very quickly going to be my favourite effect. |

I have ordered the Square Circle Deception. Is one box enough or would it be redundant to order the Circus Wagon or Dagger Vanish?
Actually I like the brighter colored Mak models, seems kids like the colors better than the older look.
