The first M-U-M online supplement will be available to read and download tomorrow, August 1, at www.magicsam.com. For those of you who regularly access the magazine in its digital format, the supplement should be familiar in both appearance and content. In the July/August issue I promised you that this would be a robust issue, full of information; a quick perusal of its eighty pages will certainly confirm that statement.
My guess is that the first members who are going to read this issue are the ones who have paperless memberships; they are already comfortable accessing the digital version of M-U-M, and it is to them I address this request. I need you to be the S.A.M “genius bar” for those compeers who haven’t been visiting the S.A.M. website. The first thing you need to do is announce that you are available to help. This can be done via email, your assembly newsletter or website, social media, or through the old-fashioned way of personal contact and phone calls. This is an important opportunity for you to be a support system for those who are not technologically savvy. Here’s where you can exemplify the “Unity” in M-U-M. In the July/August issue I listed some ways you can help. Let me repeat them here. First, remind everyone that the magazine can be read online (on any device that can access the Internet), or it can be downloaded (as either a PDF file or in a format that will allow you to access the bonus content – be aware that this is a bigger file). Bring a laptop or a tablet to your assembly meeting and show the other members how to navigate through the magazine. Every public library now has computers that can be used without charge. Take a member who doesn’t have a computer to the library and show him or her how simple it is to get online to access the digital version of the magazine. It is also permissible to print out pages from the magazine for your own use. So, print out the table of contents of the most recent issue, bring it to your meeting, and let those who don’t have a computer choose articles they’d like to read. Print them out and bring them to the next meeting. In other words, please do what you can to help your fellow compeers become familiar with the resources on the S.A.M. website; there’s a lot of information there, including several years’ worth of back issues of M-U-M. I hope you enjoy the August supplement. – Michael Close, editor M-U-M. |
