After successfully hitching across Canada, the Netherlands and Germany, Hitchbot met a sad and violent end.

Wouldn't it have been more efficient to call it, "botch"?
Why? It did it's job perfectly in Canada and Europe. For that matter, since the "hitchbot" was more of a "social experiment," it did it's job perfectly in America too, we just don't like the answer.

A nice part of the story is that many, many Americans are supporting the project and are offering help to get Hitchbot back on the road.

A pair of YouTube pranksters have admitted to faking a surveillance video that purported to show the destruction of the hitchhiking Canadian robot hitchBOT.
YouTube star Jesse Wellens of PrankvsPrank and his friend Ed Bassmaster revealed in a new video how they faked the footage. However, Wellens denies that they were the ones who destroyed hitchBOT.
"I edited the video to look like a true 'surveillance video' and I sent it off to the news because they had all been asking me for interviews and information. The reporters began reporting, showing the footage, and the alleged killer of this so-called famous robot!" wrote Wellens in the YouTube post.
HitchBOT was only two weeks into its first tour across the U.S. when it was destroyed in Philadelphia.
The Canadian researchers responsible for hitchBOT, a child-sized "social robot" famous for its cross-country travels, confirmed over the weekend that their creation had been destroyed beyond repair.
Wellens and Bassmaster were the last people to have picked up the robot on what was meant to be a cross-country trip.
"We were upset about the vandalism of hitchBOT and went in search to find any surveillance footage of the area that may have existed, so we could find out who the killer was!" wrote Wellens.
"We had no luck, and then the idea sparked for us to create fake surveillance footage of 'Always Teste,' Ed's character and PRANK THE NEWS!" he wrote.
Wellens is also the sole source of the purported security tape, which he released on Snapchat and sent to several reporters Monday.
Some of the pranksters' fans congratulated them for getting news organizations around the world to run their faked footage.
"This is genius. I love it when Ed and Jesse prank. It literally went worldwide. I saw it on my news channel," wrote Dylan G on YouTube.
Funny how being a liar and ******* is justified with the word "prank".

On the other hand, it is funny how purported news outlets fail to perform any checks on their purported "facts."

Buzzkill wasn't the word I was thinking. Though you did use it in the previous sentence.

^^What I was thinking. It doesn't diminish what the pranksters or the vandals have done. They are all idiots in my book. Perhaps some fed-up geek will invent an ass-whooping robot to spend some time with them.
There are a few viral videos of pranksters getting pounded by those they are pranking. They are immensely satisfying to watch. I have less sympathy for vandals.
I don't find guys sending in faked footage of vandals 'killing' the robot all that much different than the stories that the onion produces and puts on their websites which could all be considered 'prank' stories. Now, I'm sure some of you will say that it is well known that "The Onion" is a site known for doing this but that doesn't stop people getting fooled on a regular basis by their stories, including news outlets. Do you hold them in contempt also?

As you say, The Onion is a known satrical paper (and no, I don't like them all that much). If people fall for what they publish, that's their problem. THIS was presented as legitimate evidence until it was questioned and then the guy backed off and said; "Oh no. It was a prank!"
"I was just joking," is the last refuge of the coward.

Who are you to decide who is joking and when?
A good joke will not have someone saying "it is joke mind you" until AFTER it is done. Get over your judgemental BS.

Jokes and pranks are not the same, and neither are the levels of each. Just as there is a difference between a funny, but clean joke and one that creates societal problems (bathroom humor, racist jokes, etc.), there is a difference in pranks between say, a joy buzzer and one that honestly and severely upsets people.
As someone who has first-hand knowledge of the "law & order" system, you should recognize that different levels of punishment are applied to different levels of infraction. Generally, these are determined by the amount of problems they inflict on society. Think about the family that created a hoax that their child was trapped inside a giant balloon that floated away.
Some pranks go far beyond fake dog poop on your mom's floor. Upset your mom and you might get chewed out, even if the prank was in fact harmless. Upset someone who you don't know, and who may very well kick your ***, and you might get a different result. But, upset a crowd and you might find a completely different outcome.
As magicians, we are constantly hearing from the majority of us that we should not perform things like the Magic Ding Dong, or the Bra Trick. It's happening lately with the spider on the hand trick(s). Of course, we have become a society that is fast becoming intolerant of lack of sensitivity, and I am one who thinks political correctness is reaching a ridiculous level. But, I really have no tolerance for people who screw with other people, purely for their own enjoyment.
Sometimes the jokes just aren't funny enough.
I still have the same opinion regarding vandals. Even if the robot-destroying video was a hoax, it doesn't change the fact that SOMEONE trashed it, and for no better reason than they were ***holes.

Whoever destroyed the robot committed a crime and should be punished. That wasn't a hoax.
The guys who made up a video of someone destroying the robot and fed it to the news were creating a prank on the news station. That was a hoax. (Kinda like the guys doing the magic trick behind the news caster which everyone thought was for real.)
Danny and I aren't suggesting the guys who destroyed the robot did nothing wrong. It's the guys who made a phony video that fooled the news media that are the ones we're saying did nothing wrong.
