Wow!
Kinda looks like the bright side, only darker. Who would've thunk it?

Nobody gonna pedantically point out that the far side of the moon aint dark?
There. Did it. Nice to see the photos. The far side has been seen and mapped, but these are new and fresh.

Stay off Io!
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

What's beautiful is that it's captured as it crosses a brightly lit Earth! many thanx for the link. Lynn

I think it's fascinating that we are able to see something that no creature on our planet has been able to for millions of years, even though it has been in view the entire time.

Finally pulled my copy of Antonín Rükl's Atlas of the Moon off the shelf to verify something.
The first pictures of the far side of the moon were taken back in 1959 by the Soviet probe Luna 3. In 1966-67, NASA surveyed the entire moon with the Lunar Orbiter program, except for about 1% of the south polar region. The Apollo missions provided considerable data to improve the accuracy of the maps. So the picture in the OP isn't the first shot we've had of the far side. But it is by far the most complete and spectacular.

Now I wonder how many people actually SAW it, not just in pictures but in real life. I am not prepared to do the research, but it must be a really low number.
Lynnef, that's wild! Did he explain how they got into space, survived while there, and then back to Earth again? |
