Hi folks,
Curious to ask those of you who stage events for publicity what your strategy is for making sure the press turns up. Supposing you have adequate planning time. What would you do? Start with a specific media sponsor? Blitz all media with press releases? How far out (geographically) have you ever gotten coverage? Just wanting to pick the locks of your collective minds. Thanks.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

There are several ways, the most important one is making sure that the escape is safe and can be done. Then it comes down to finding the venue and letting the media know with press releases.
As for how far, well that is up to you. |

There is a book that was put out in the early 90s by The Mastermind Group that walks you step by step through publicity stunts. The first part of it is a workbook to get set up with the press and to determine what goals and results you need from the stunt, as well as how to acheive them. The second half covers different stunts and how they work, what you need and how to pull them off.
There is also a small section in the back coverng Dixie Dooly's stunts in Vegas and gives examples of people that are constantly being written up in the papers. It covers the straight jacket, blindfold drive, levitation/suspension and others. Its fairly hard to find now, so when I dig my copy out I will post the title on this thread. If being a 'big name' is your goal, it will take you there, at the expense of your privacy. Be sure that's what you want.

You keep teasing us with that. Don't you think its kind of mean, knowing how much we all want to get our hands on a copy?
Actualy I have all of my books in the bookshelf now so I will look for the title at lunch. **** The name of the book is: Publicity Stunts How to get your name in the newspaper. Written by Jon Jenson Produced by The Mastermind Group 1998 It is 65 single sided pages and comb bound. Caters more towards Magicians, but does include the straight jacket.

Well, I don't realy want to sell my copy, and I ran a web spider for about 8K sites and came up with nothing for another copy.
Jon Jenson the writer and Illustrator is just as much of a mystery. So is the mastermind group. You could e-mail Dixie. He should remember providing the newspaper articles to Jenson, and may have a way to contact him. His e-mail is at the bottom of this page. The video looks cool too. I always like that kind of historical stuff. http://www.houdiniexperience.com/MAGIC%20SHOP.htm

Grrr.. someone else teasing me with interesting sounding books that I can't get copies of. I am glad I didn't send you and Shawn Valentines cards now.
Thanks for taking a look King. It seems like you hit the same wall I did, I will just have to keep my eyes open for a copy. Cheers David

I'm sure that when I get Steve's new book this one will go in the recycle bin.
**** Update on book. I remember where I bought it now. I got it from Chuck and Barbara Leach. They got it as a sample from Murphys magic supplies. The title is still in Murphys list but the link is not active. You could email them and see if more are available. I'm getting old. That was only like two years ago, and I couldn't remember where I got it.

I'm having trouble finding the Murphy's Magic that lists that title. Has anyone else out there had any luck?

You have to go to the catalog and then books. Down at P its listed as publicity stunts. Jon Jenson has some sponge ball books in the list above that.

Well, I found the sponge ball stuff but the only thing listed under Publicity Stunts is Pulp Friction by Lee Asher, Punch Letters by Ray Grismer, and Pure Effects by Derren Brown. I'm going to try to e-mail them to see if they can still get the Publicity Stunts book. Or maybe I could contact Mr. Jenson directly.
Regarding Dixie Dooly, I haven't seen his videos yet but I did see his show out in Vegas a few years back. I thought it was pretty good and I was also considering getting his tapes, so I also would appreciate any feedback from someone who has seen them. Best regards, Tony Parisi |

I just had no luck at the Murphy's site but I manage to order the book from Misdirection Magic Shop out of San Francisco for $25.00. Anyone interested can contact them at http://www.misdirections.com.
The book is only listed as "Publicity Stunts" but I called and spoke to them and verified that it is the Jon Jenson book with the long title. They are there on the weekends but are closed on Mondays, and you cannot order the book from the website. You must call or e-mail them. Best regards, Tony Parisi |
