I have this situation where a good friend of mines is asking to preform some magic at his wedding party talent show in Cali. Some background on me. I mainly do close up magic with mostly cards and little coins and pick pocketing. I want to preform a comedy style show. I'm just going to flat out and say it. Something like Justin Willmans Sleight of Mouth. Here a clip of some of the trick's I'd like to preform. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHjXH4TsALI (and the whole show if you've never seen it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG1aii3FE1o)
But I recently watched the special and stay him preform Cue the Magic. I loved the trick https://vimeo.com/76859855 . But I can't find it anywhere because it's sold out. And I don't think spending $250 for a trick I'm going to do once is worth it for me. I am thinking about doing it another way. But I wanted some opinions. I was wondering if I could do it with a ID instead of the one card in the envelope. And the final thing I want to ask. I'm going to be in Cali for this wedding at the end of the month. Can anyone get my girlfriend and I into Magic Castle? I've tried every connection I know. And with a month to go. I can't find a way in. So if anyone could help me. I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank You |

A co-worker of mine gave me this idea. But can you rent a trick from someone else?

People who live here don't call it Cali.
Are you a member of the SAM or IBM? You can get in the Castle if you are.

I thought Cali was a foreign country. Never heard that as a term for California

My advice is not to do anything new just because you think it will make you popular or the talk of the party.
If your best material is not what's best for the event the pass on the invite. Pushing yourself into performing something that's not you, but something you like to watch someone else do, isn't going to advance the art. Why don't you offer to do some strolling at the reception with the magic that you know and that makes you look good?

Do you know how far you will be from the Magic Castle?
Are you flying or driving? Why the topic heading of "directions to Cali"? I agree that you should do what you do best, and that's never something you've never done before. |

Have you guys heard of Biggie Smalls or LL Cool J?... I'm from Brooklyn/Queens. I'm just a guy who does magic as a hobby. I was just looking for some help for a one day trip. I'll be in San Fran Aug 28. And then be in Newport beach from the 1st to the 6th of Sept. I was hopeing to go on the 6th. Because of all my wedding duties. I'll be busy all week. I've never been pass the Mississippi river (besides AZ). And it's my first time in Cali. |

[/quote] Yes...some magicians have a bit of knowledge about rap culture and slang... I think I remember Bill Hegbli mentioning that he was a huge fan of both LL Cool Jay and Biggie Smalls, but most café members do not associate with anything trendy or stylish in the area of music and fashion (especially fashion). PS You used Cali again in your most recent post. Are you trying to get banned on purpose????? |

Wait, I would get banned for using short hand and spell it that way? I didn't know it was in the rules. I think it's weird everyone is making a big deal about something that has nothing to do with what I'm asking here. I'm just a guy who loves magic. And would love to go to Magic Castle on my trip out west. I hope I'm not judged because I say Cali instead of California. Because I'm pretty sure I say water different from most people. And a list of other words. If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it. If you can't it's ok. But thank you for reading and the advice. |

Getting banned for saying Cali? Yikes!
Maybe we are being overly sensitive! |

If you stay at The Magic Castle Hotel (which is right next door), then you are also granted entry into The Magic Castle (it's a perk for guests of the hotel).
Unless it would totally disrupt your existing lodging plans, you could simply get a room there for one night of your stay in California (whichever night you want to visit the Castle). It's not a fancy hotel, or anything; just a simple, smallish motel, really. That's what I did.

Jeebs9: if it's a "wedding party talent show" then if you're on longer than the length of a song, then you're on too long.
One trick, that's it. My suggestion that I just made up is this: 1. Force a card with a forcing deck so it can't go wrong 2. Say you will find the card with the deck in your pocket. Ask for a. Drum roll (hands on tables) 3. Place force deck in pocket next to a regular deck. 4. Get it wrong twice before taking regular deck from pocket 5. Spec checks that her card is missing. It's not even in the deck! 6. It's in an impossible location!! Like wrapped up in a wedding present, or down the brides dress, anywhere you can stick a dupe of your force. Ta da!!!! (No it's not signed. But your brilliant forcing deck means that no one suspects a duplicate. And if they do, who cares? It's a wedding talent show, FFS, not Penn &Teller Fool Us) It's stand up. No one asks to examine stuff. It's a wedding. They'll love you. You do NOT need to spend anything,, just a little time thinking. Have fun! |

And no, I don't think the cue cards trick would work with an ID. yiud have to put the cue cards down, take out the box and do the whole ID bit and it would be messy.
Why not just do the ID? Get the crowd to choose the card or better, the bride and groom, demonstrating their mutual intuition. (I think you are overthinking this.) |

For Magic Castle. I believe if you subscribe to Genie Magazie you can get a pass. Otherwise visit one of the local magic shops. Best Magic might be near you. Or Kendrakes Magic shop. Stop by, talk to the guys, buy a few things and they'll like hook you up with a pass. But you have to make reservations (Monday-Wednesday are best weekends are booked solid for months). Also be prepared to spend a bit. With a guess pass you have to eat dinner as well as valet parking and I think there also may be an admittance fee. Plus if you hang out a bit there will be drinks.
Another option is to,post here in the Café asking if there an AMA member willing to hook you up with a pass. Good luck. Have fun in Cali.

I've actually done what you explained and I've also done thought of card (by wife) in impossible location (Husband's pocket). I guess your right that I'm over thinking this. And that the plain old ID would work. I guess I thought of the Cue The Magic as something fresh I could do in 5 mintues and funny. I've done a lot of tricks for these friends (We hangout a lot). I've done card under watch and Impossible location at their engagement party. But thank you for the advice!! It really means a lot to me. Quote:

Also there's a dress code at the castle. Suit coat and tie for men. Appropriate evening wear for women
