IT IS FICTION. ANY fiction can be extrapolated to look silly.

I have never watched Dr. Who. But I thought you aficionados might enjoy this teaser from the BBC online about driving the TARDIS.

Actually, it wasn't just Wil Wheaton. George Taki and Walter Koenig both mentioned that they had a set series of buttons to use for certain procedures. (A director once told "Sulu" to push a certain button and he said that would blow up the Enterprise.)

There's also a moment in the BBC film "Adventures In Time And Space" where the 1st Doctor (William Hartnell) mentions that the controls had to be operated in a certain manner if it were to be believable.

OTOH, David Tennant had a control panel that looked like a yard sale (Bells and a typewriter keyboard as well as other things) and he appeared to just hit them at random. (With his feet ocassionally.) I think HIS theory was that the TARDIS was meant to be flown by six people and he's trying to do the work of all six at once!

On the contrary, I enjoy it.

I think on a "silly" scale, Dr. Who would be below Star Trek and Space 1999 (stupid, but never silly) and way WAY above stuff like Batman and Wonder Woman (super hero shows, true, but each had "pop" science fiction elements) Or Time Tunnel and Lost In Space! Smile

If you think "new Who" is silly, avoid "classic Who" by all means.

I enjoy camp. I didn't say "silly was bad, just that it is what it is. My opinion is also based on the single season I watched. Those aliens that unzip themselves from an outer human skin and fart as a result of such disguise is far more ridiculous than most things even on the original Star Trek (and they had some awfully hokey stuff, as well!)

Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea .... they were all campy, or "silly" but I like watching. I don't think this is something to get worked up about, Danny; it's simply my opinion.

What are you personalizing it to me for? Several others are the ones pointing this stiff out.

I didn't mean to offend. When you capitalized "IT IS FICTION", it seemed you were yelling or scolding me. Accept my apologies if I misinterpreted.

Well, how ELSE would you do it? In a Delorean?

A big art-deco device with a spinning wheel on the back?

If you've seen the "Big Bang Theory" episode where they get that machine, there's a great line: " if anything it looks like something Elton John would drive through the Everglades."

As for my "silly" comment, I think that great science fiction can take outlandish concepts but make them acceptable. Doctor Who, on the other hand, is just plain silly.

There's a quick gag in the first "Gremlins" movie!
