I carry a few puzzle type effects which seem perfect for skeptics. Assuming I’m in the middle of things. I’ll do the old ring and spring, hand it to the skeptic and continue with the regular set - if - possible (leaving them with something to figure out) If they are all skeptics I might just end it there. IF I get the feeling they are all going to give me a hard time, right from the start, then it’s a quick ball production from behind an ear, a few jokes and I’m walking with a smile. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Said the auto mechanic about a screening customer “I wish I had 300 customers like that” Why?? “Because I have 500 customers like that right now”.

I find it tricky when the person is only interested in finding the secret as opposed to enjoying the magic. Or being very skeptical about being hustled. In stand up monte, when asking where the lady is, I often get stalls or lack of participation. I tell them it will be fine, this is only for educational purposes.
I try to make it fun and engaging. To offer them some fun and mystery they would not have gotten other wise. If someone absolutely gives me stonewall, should I offer them this experience? If I do, I try not to do something they could foil, say by turning a card over. I do keep trying tho, don't take it personal and try to share the joy. For instance, I've had Witnesses turn away, and refuse to listen or converse when I try to engage. Now in these instances, I try to impress that I specialize in illusion. That seems to be ok with them these days, so that's good. I like Jay's idea about trying, but being ready to leave with a joke and a smile. |

I wouldn't get into a long discussion with someone who said they didn't like magic because it's fake during a gig, but if it were among friends, I'd have to ask if they didn't go to the movies either.
But there are many reason people enjoy watching magic. Some like to believe, some like the suspended disbelief, some like to watch the skill of the performer, some like the performance itself. |

When I used to do restaurant work, roughly 1 in 20 tables would turn me down usually because one person at the table didn't like magic.
I'd quickly glance at the rest of the table and see whether the others looked eager or had anything to say. If they looked interested, I'd just say, "May I perform for them?" If no one looked interested, I'd just say "Enjoy your dinner. Let me know if you need anything," and I would leave. Don't stress yourself out over convincing someone your art is worthwhile when there are plenty of other people who are interested and waiting for you to perform for them. Also, be aware of how you approach the table. Make sure you have a friendly demeanour and you look professional as well.

By the way, I've had people who were previously not interested, call me back to the table when they hear other near them laughing and having a good time.
