REVIEW: The Vernon Seminar (2 DVD Set) by Vanishing Inc.

RATING: 4.5 Out Of 5 Stars

For students of magic, this is an excellent addition to your DVD library. This Vanishing Inc. project is entitled "Roberto Giobbi's Dai Vernon Seminar." And, that is exactly what this double DVD set is; a lecture, taught by Giobbi, on Vernon.

Giobbi in his own right is a masterful magician know for his Card College book set. He teaches all about Vernon, his life, his personality, his obsession with perfecting technique and how Vernon vastly improved various tricks and routines. This DVD instructs on Vernon's philosophy, theory and thought process on his way to perfection.

Giobbi, a scholar on the topic, plays various clips of Vernon performing on various television appearances. Giobbi also demonstrates Vernon's tricks, what Vernon did to improve them and why Vernon did it better. The theory and philosophy, to me, is the most important part of the lecture. It is about understanding how and why, not just how to do it. This DVD makes you think about your magic and your performance.

The quality of the DVD is excellent and I had no problem watching this 3 hours captivating lecture. During the lecture Giobbi references and recommends various books written by Vernon.

Also included on the DVD is a 79 page PDF which further details Vernon life and work. It is appropriately entitled "Homage to Dai Vernon: Life and Work." In the PDF, Giobbo details Vernon's Routines, including Cups and Ball, Vernon's Dice Routine, the Mental Card Miracle and others. The PDF also includes a reprint of a portion of the 3rd version of the Expert Card Technique which teaches Dai Vernon Magic and also contains a reprint of 28 Card Secrets.

If you wanted to master the magic taught on the DVD and in the PDF, it will take you years, but I do not think this DVD was produced to teach magic. It was made to teach Vernon, and that it does, excellently.

For serious students of Vernon and his magic, this DVD set is a must have. Giobbi's lecture is fascinating, and I'm glad he put it down onto DVD. He never got around to doing his Vernon lecture in my area.
