Just got this email and ordered immediately:
Earlier this year, Richard Osterlind traveled to Europe to give master classes in Belgium, France and Italy. While in Paris, he was approached by his friend Burt Wayne, to perform and record what could only be called "Street Mentalism" in front of Notre Dame Cathedral. Alternating back and forth, Richard and Burt performed for spectators from many different countries. The material is a mixture of standard effects and original routines. The spontaneous nature of the recording is fascinating to watch and truly reflects real-world conditions. Time after time, you will see startled expressions of joy on travelers from around the world and you will learn new presentations from even ideas you already know! It is important to mention the entire video is made up of billet work requiring basically no props. Richard's luggage, in fact, had been lost by the airline and he was forced to borrow a jacket and work in jeans! Yet, with the exception of just one routine that uses a Swami and a cheap blackboard he had purchased, simple billets and blank index cards are all that was used to create first-class performances! In addition to Burt's great contributions (he is also a top-class performer), he took it upon himself to hire an expert editor which has resulted in a totally professional recording. The explanations are clear and concise with cuts to the performing segments to make everything understandable. This is a video you will certainly learn from! Many of the effects could have been sold separately for the price of the entire DVD! Please note, this DVD will ONLY play in your computer. It is not formatted to play on a stand-alone DVD player. We have only a very limited quantity of these DVDs in stock, ready for immediate shipping and are offering them at only $39.95. Get yours today before they are gone!

Order placed. No need to think about this one. Anything from Richard is quality.
(Now I just need to find some time to watch it) |

I thought it was an odd choice to burn these so that they don't work on dvd players, only pc/laptops... as that'll make copying and sharing the info that much easier...

Received mine yesterday!
I might have been missing something (I 'rewound' and rewatched several times), but it seemed to me that there was something pretty major missing from the Monuments effect, both from the performance and from the explanation. There's a definite edit in the performance, and it seems to coincide with a (rather crucial) unexplained aspect of the working. Having full faith in Richard and Jim, I'm assuming this is one of those oversights borne of such familiarity with the work that the omission went right over their heads. Haven't finished the whole DVD yet, but I'm at least halfway through. Josh |

I'm pretty disappointed. I tried to order the day I got my newsletter, but it wasn't on the website. I wrote twice asking about purchasing it, but never got a reply. I was surprised because I've always found the customer service excellent when I shopped at Osterlind's. I guess Jim must have been overwhelmed by purchasers, but I was doubly disappointed because of not being able to buy the DVD and because I didn't get a response.

Richard Osterlind usually puts out quality material with high production values. On this occasion it looks as though he has misfired. Hope it's not a sign of things to come (a la Sankey). From reading his recent posts it looks like he's deserted the Café. A real shame imho.

I had a discussion with someone else who received the DVD, and (trying not to put words in his mouth here; I hope he'll jump in and correct me if I'm wrong) he felt that the necessary information was there, albeit briefly. So I don't want to come off as too strident in my reaction to the teaching of the Monument effect.

Sorry for being late to the party but I just came across this thread. Here are a few pertinent facts about the recent billet DVD.
First, this wasn't an Osterlind Mysteries production. It was produced by French magician Burt Wayne - shot in Paris when Richard was lecturing there and edited and duplicated there. (I thought this was clear from our e-mail but perhaps not...) So, any inference that this DVD reflects in any way on upcoming releases directly produced by Richard and I is, frankly, a bit silly. This DVD was an unplanned oddity and we thought people who appreciate Richard's work would be interested in it - end of story. Regarding its apparent scarcity, we were able to obtain a few dozen copies from Mr. Wayne to offer to our mailing list for interested parties. We had no idea they would sell so fast. The good news is that we're going to be getting some more - we're not sure how many as of yet - but we will send out another e-mail when they arrive. That should be within the next two weeks. Also, I spend most of my mornings handling e-mail for Osterlind Mysteries and I always answer any and all inquiries. If you didn't get an answer to an e-mail, it simply means that I never got it. We received a lot of e-mails wondering where the billet DVD disappeared to and I answered every one that I actually received. Just wanted to clear that up. Regarding Richard not spending any more time on the Café, the real shame rests solely with those posters who oftentimes make this a terrible place. Richard isn't the first Café VIP to decide that his time is better spent doing other things and he most certainly won't be the last - that is, unless some who frequent this place learn a bit more about manners. If you're on the Osterlind Mysteries mailing list, you'll be getting a notification when restock of the billet DVD arrives. If you're not on the list, you can sign up here. I believe that covers everything but I'd be happy to answer any other questions. |

Thanks Jim, so the production issues are down to the fact this isn't an official Osterlind Mysteries release and so the expected high standards haven't been applied. All makes sense now.

If it were our project, Richard and I would probably have made a few different editing decisions (again, it wasn't our project so nothing "went right over our heads") but all in all, Richard was happy with the cinéma vérité quality of the final result. Also, we continue to believe that there is quite a bit of instructional value here, not the least of which is watching Richard work with laymen in a real-world environment on the streets of Paris, and if we get more copies, we will absolutely offer them again. Though it's not our production, we continue to believe that it's a worthwhile product. |

Jim,
I stand corrected on the omissions "going over" your heads. The production appears, from its packaging, from the email, and from the actual content, to have been a wholly collaborative effort, so hopefully you'll understand why nobody had any reason to believe that the editing decisions were one-sided. Best regards, Josh |

Could be this ad that caused people to think it was produced by Osterlind Mysteries Jim.
http://myemail.constantcontact.com/A-new......Rfa6XUtM Since it says "Osterlind Mysteries" then it shows the DVD cover. Not silly at all. James Quote: On Sep 5, 2015, Jim Sisti wrote:

Of course the e-mail had our logo - we were selling the product after all - but the copy says it was recorded by Burt Wayne. I get e-mail all the time from various magic dealers that feature their logo and then offering to sell me products (just a recent perusal through my mailbox shows examples from Vanishing Inc. and Meir Yedid). I don't make the assumption that the products offered are actually produced by them (though sometimes they are but sometimes they aren't). In any event, I believe this is all clear for everyone now.
We did get word that more copies of the billet DVD will be on their way to us shortly. Those of you signed up for our newsletter (and there's been a lot of new subscribers - thanks!) will be the first to know when they arrive. We're hoping this could be early next week. |
