Dick Oslund - Nothing like being made to feel like a potted plant, eh? I had a woman call me once and in her words, "I want you to stand there and do your little tricks as people walk in."
I upped my fee (insult tax) and converted the gig into a typical strolling gig once I was on site, and made it work.

Here's one that will make you aware of how many summers you have under your top hat...
I remember being booked to perform on top of the refreshment stand/projection building at a drive-in theater. Julie |

Egad Julie! A drive-in theater! (I remember those!)
I vaguely recall that one of the old time spook show pro's. once did his midnight spooker in a drive in. He worked on the roof of the pop corn joint, too. Michael! I 'loved' the "insult tax"!!!

Thumbs up for "insult tax", lol. I could see magic working at a grocery store if it was controlled and in a specific spot. Possibly even pitch a few food items. I don't think strolling works very well considering the environment.

HI TERRY!
I think perhaps, that young fellows, eager to perform, and not realizing or understanding the "dynamics" of situations (like a supermarket, or a drive in movie concession stand roof, or the top of a ticket kiosk, will "seize" ANY opportunity to do their "latest" from the magic shop. Getting booked to perform on the deck of a sinking ship, is a rather poor way to gain performing experience! --especially, if you're the closing act!!!

Speaking of ships (but not sinking ships), the most unique one I ever performed on (and several times at that) was a battleship. In Mobile Bay is the USS Alabama, and it is frequently booked for events, typically upscale corporate (I mean how many people can afford to rent a battleship??). It was a very unique performing environment. Every turn presented a different one, it seemed. But the crowds were there for parties, so were easy to work.
