I knew it before but now I really understand why you never play poker with Ricky Jay....

Meh, I guess he's okay with a deck of cards.
I would love to play poker with Ricky! When his turn came to deal I would muck every hand he dealt...but nonetheless. Haha

Ricky Jay has superlative presentation skills and his performances are a joy to watch.
However, something I was curious about - his supposed connections to real cardsharps and gambling cheats. I'm suspicious about this (not sure why, just am). Does anyone know (can it be known?) whether this is just part of his performance persona (which seems to blur into his real personality) or if he really does know 'people'? |

"I know people who make a living as card cheats and dice hustlers, and the fact that they're willing to share secrets of the trade with me is terrific. And when they ask me not to talk about it I don't talk about it. I learned this at a very early age. Honoring these pacts are a defining part of both my professional and my personal life." — Ricky Jay I don't think it can be proven per-say, however, is it really that hard to believe? It wouldn't necessarily be suspect even if your average Joe that only picks up a deck of cards to play Solitaire to know a gambling cheat, especially if they live somewhere there is a lot of gambling taking place. Dai Vernon knew many real card cheats in his day and Vernon was a mentor to Ricky, so the likelihood of Ricky knowing some is highly plausible.

I think my suspicion with Ricky is that it's so hard to see the 'real' Ricky, and his persona is so strong and effective. But I'm happy to accept that he really moves in certain circles.

Jay is a performer.
What you see in his video clips is an actor undertaking a performance. To somehow equate an actors performance with something in reality (does he know any"real" hustlers?) is tempting, but ultimately pointless. Folks often mix-up an actors character with that same actors own personality ... but rarely do the two have anything to do with each other. Taylor Swifts super-fans "think" they know her, when in reality they don't have a clue. Same applies to Ricky Jay. (this post and $1.00 will get you a minus the donut) |

Just to be clear, I'm asking 'does he know any real hustlers' because I wondering whether his statements about knowing such folks are part of his act/persona, or if it's true. I thought maybe some here would know more. I'm just curious.

Much of Jays act, (like any other performer) isn't about "telling the truth", it's about entertaining you.
Having said that, he's certainly been floating around long enough to make the acquaintance of a hustler or two. But if you've taken any time to read back through this forum, you'd know that "real" hustlers don't share information with folks who are going to proceed to write a book about what they tell them ... or make a TV show out of something they've showed them. You do the math |
