Have you all been watching Paul kill it on America's Got Talent? Well, he's reached the finals next week. You can see his performances on the AGT website. And 3 other variety performers are in the finals too--Piff the Magic Dragon, magician Derek Hughes and mentalist Oz Pearlman. Hooray!

It looks like 2015 is the year for our allied arts. Terry Fator won. Matt Franco won. Now 3 greats in the finals. Paul Verdin is super terrific.

Paul's "borrowed" a bit of everything from every other vent.
I find him unbearable.

Congrats to Paul. Well deserved, he did great performances throughout. My personal favorites were also Gary Vider, Oz Pearlman, and Piff.
But hey, all those finalists were fantastic.

I thought Oz Pearlman was much better. And I am into vertriloquism.

I thought it was a toss up between Paul Zerdin and Oz. Not sure how Oz ended up in third, but great effort. He really performed well.

David Strassman not happy that Zerdin stole his bit and used it on AGT:

Both Strassman and Lucas are wrong; there are hundreds of animatronic puppets out there and thousands of vent masks. Just because an act uses commonly available props does not make it plagiarism.

Here's Jay Johnson's interesting take on the controversy:

Using the same props is one thing; using the same lines is another. Don't know about Lucas because I'm not familiar with his act, but the Strassman bit is nearly identical to Zerdin's.

Johnstone hits the nail on the head, it seems.

The line "Is he gone?" is the same, but Chuck is a completely different character than Sam, and the routines did diverge.

Most vent mask routines I have seen are very similar. When designing my one I came up with a different scenario which gets a laugh and is not like the others. I would probably get even more laughs if I copied someone else but I wouldn't be happy with that.

I thought that Paul's mask routine was different enough from others to not be a problem.

I have seen an older video of a vent in England who did the exact thing on TV using a hard figure. I have corresponded with the vent before but unfortunately I can no longer find his video on YouTube. I believe the video is older than David Strassman's

I have also done a similar thing on TV using an Axtell HF monkey...

it might be a bit unfair to conclude that Paul Zerdin deliberately copied from David Strassman as far as the HF puppet routine is concerned.

As for the mask... Zerdin has been doing it for the longest time. In fact the line "I haven't done my dancing yet" I believe was first used by him and is now being used by other vents.

We all hate being copied... but sometimes we forget that we also copied something from someone somehow Smile

What's silly is when a particular bit we copied from someone (under the disguise "inspired by") is now being copied by someone, we get mad. Smile

Smile

...it is of course a different story when a bit is without a doubt your original... but in the case of hf puppets and the masks, as well as the dummy's dummy and vent gags like drinking a glass of wine, the muffled voice etc, it might be unfair to accuse someone of copying.

Another silly thing is when you have done a lot of stuff to be different... but they see a similar bit or line, they focus on that and forget all the stuff you have added to your act to be different.
