I have a (very busy) working magician friend........he works about 35 weeks per year all over a 3-state area.....not drowning in $$, but certainly paying the bills. He's often heard, when asked to perform for free, "Hey, it'll be great exposure for you." To which he whimsically replies: People die from exposure every day! I just love that one!
His face isn't really this long in-person!

I always reference the Donner Party when anyone mentions exposure.

Bob Kohler and I were having a discussion about this a few years back. He told me a story about Bob Sheets (I think). The gist of the story was this;
Caller: "Hi I'm looking for a magician for my kids birthday for about an hour. How much do you charge?" Bob: "I don't do kid shows but I can find you someone who does" Caller: "But I heard you were really good. Can you at least give me an idea of what you would charge?" Bob: "$1,000" Caller: "$1,000? That's more than my doctor charges!" Bob: "Get a better doctor!" Click... |

When asked about my fee, I remind them that it is a "performance fee" not an hourly rate.

Once you are to the point if justifying your fee you have lost any real position in a negotiation.
By the time you get to price all that should be put out there already. I never justify a fee. It is what it is. It is not my function to make sure you can afford it.

I'm pretty sure the idea here was to price himself out of range so she would be forced to go somewhere else.
The Santa Rosa, CA area doesn't generally spend that kind of money on magicians. Which is why I work in the southern bay and silicone valley area. |

Once had a lady called and said a magician had cancelled on her. She argued at my fee because it was twice as much as the other guy (It was the going rate around town tho). She would not let it go and over and over kept telling me how much cheaper the other guy was. In the end I just said, "Yes, but he's not turning up. I can charge that much when I don't turn up"

What people need to understand is that magic is a skill we take a lot of time building. No one who hires me would ever feel comfortable approaching a group they are not introduced to and by the end leave them entertained and speechless. Really, this takes years. Magic is only one part of it. They pay us because we bring them something they can't.
When you tell them what your price is and they say "wow" just say "Yep that's what your guests will say. |

Why do they need to understand that exactly?
It is shocking to me what magicians think I'd important. I don't know why more people don't take small business courses to learn how to actually run a business. Not some crap from a magic convention or the latest system but university level courses. It would help most tremendously.

If the public doesn't understand what it takes to present a polished and entertaining act, we can only blame ourselves . I can honestly say that I have seen many more inept paid magicians than just about any professional field of entertainer,
. We read posts on the Café all the time that say something like; I have a show in a month. I never did this type of show before. Can you suggest 10 tricks for me to do? Sometimes, no matter how little the client pays, it's too much. |

Absolutely.
The big problem is that then 10 months later that guy writes a book and a system for booking shows. Then some here applaud everything like that in the spirit of "helping" and everyone is entitled to an opinion. It is a sad cycle. Nobody wants to take the time to learn properly it seems.
