Here are my ladies!...
When my priority box delivered I was horrified that I could hear coins jingling all over inside the box!! 😳 I opened and they were completely free inside! If you have the shell shocked set, it has (4) coins sleeves adhered inside the DVD case. That's fine, seller did that - but just dropped the DVD in the shipping box and didn't pack to keep it closed! So it jarred open and spilled all coins. I know you thought the same thing as me: is the expanded shell damaged???...thank God, everything we're all fine!! 😃 Click here to view attached image.

Here is edge of stack. Yes, 100% coverage. But, as you will look - the shell edge is totally appearance of the edge. Does anyone do anything to smooth the edge and / or age the edge?

Looks good Stephon, glad the shell was not damaged. Was it still over a coin when you opened it?
I have thought about distressing/aging the edge but haven't done so yet. One easy thing you could try is taking a black sharpie to the edge and then dabbing it with some acetone to remove as much to your liking. I've done that on several coins in the past to highlight the relief. Try it on a couple regular coins with milled edges first to practice and see if you're happy with the results. Although personally I think you may be unnecessarily concerned about it. Congrats! |

One other thing, place a coin in the shell and then slowly spin the shell over the nested coin keeping the coin inside stationary to make sure it doesn't catch at any point.
I've found before that the shell may work perfectly 99% of the time but can get snagged if it and the coin inside are in just the right position because many coins are not perfectly round. If this is the case then naturally it will only get stuck at the worst possible time, you know how that goes! |

Update: I DID re-finish all coins to match using Liver of Sulfur and definitely improved the edges and faces of the coins. Even after using them all this time it looks really good to natural viewing distance.

And the Faces match perfectly. That is the shell on top. Quite a difference. This stuff is fantastic for patina coins!

I just received the walking liberty "deep dish". Only comment is that the edges on the shell are the re-milled edges real "clean" looking. I have to find a way to "dirty" them up.

Or the quick and easy way is to run the edge of the tip of a Sharpie around the milled edges, then quickly wipe off with a damp cloth or paper towel. You can also use steel wool, sandpaper, or a cleaner such as acetone (finger nail polish remover) to apply and then remove as much or as little as you want. Or if you use the coins a lot just let it wear off naturally through use.
Because the ink goes down inside the grooves of the milled edges it actually will last a pretty long time and look very realistic, but if needed it's easy to reapply. Edges are easy, the faces take more trial and error (and experience helps a lot) and I do recommend using liver of sulfur for the faces. But if it's only the edges it's not necessary to go to the extra hassle, especially if you don't already own liver of sulfur. |
