Hello hello!!! I'm a sailor, currently working on working the ship's deployment talent show circuit. When I get on shore duty, my wife and I plan on doing kids' parties and such, like I did in college. I also plan on joining FCM once I'm back stateside. Hello!

Welcome Dr. Bagelman,
From my username, can you guess what kind of ship I was on? (89-95) I'm sure you've seen there's a specific section for FCM. Where do you plan on settling down once you get off the pond? BoomerET |

Gee BOOMER I couldn't begin to guess what BOOMER type of boat you BOOMER were on.
I was stationed at Subase NLON BCT for about 3 years. I worked for ET's while I was there. I did see the FCM section, and I plan on moving around the corner to the joint base in Norfolk, where the Quizno's and military housing are on Terminal.

Welcome Dr_Bagelman,
You'll also want to visit "The Little Darlings" forum. The talent show circuit sounds interesting. Is that your job? Care to elaborate? I'm glad to hear that your wife is included in your plans. Tom involved me in his Magic and it is a WONDERFUL dimension in our relationship. I hear about couples that break up over Magic but once the spouse is into it, Magic is a plus instead of a drag in the relationship. Best of luck! -Mary Mowder |

Yup,
I did refits out of Holy Loch when our boat was stationed at Groton. Then we did a refit to convert to a SEAL platform, after which we worked for SPECWAR. Not a whole lot of fun working on a 'Show Boat'. It was much more fun sitting in the bottom of the ocean for 3 months at a shot. Good luck in your magical pursuits. Boomer |

Mary,
No, I'm an Information Systems Technician First Class. I do radio comms and a little bit of networks/computers. There's a series of talent shows, with elimination rounds, during deployment to ease the monotony. I'm doing a prop comedy/magic act with a partner onboard, and I really enjoy having a partner; I used to be a solo act. We're in a strong 2nd place, after a comedy/dance act that hopefully loses steam, because 1st place is $500. As far as my wife is concerned, I'm very excited, because getting back into doing shows was HER IDEA!!! We'll be Dr. Bagelman and Lady Banana. She's been part of my acts before, doing basic balloon animals and such, but now she wants in on the magic, wanting to learn actual sleights. While willing to be my box-jumper, she'll also be a magician, not just a lovely assistant. Boomer, same to you. I see you and I both have just a handful of posts, so good luck to you, as well! I lived in Holy Loch when I was 4. It's the only place I picked up an accent. I'm starting to think I could sit underwater for 3 months at a time. My current deployment has port visits few and far between, and I don't care about/need that much sun (I'm a radioman!)... but I DO loves me my internet, and just a tiny bit of EHF here and there would be finding me playing WAY too much D&D...

Thought I'd tell my story of magic real quick-like:
We had a neighbor in military housing when we lived in Scotland, a buddy of my dad's, James the Unbelievable. He noticed how seriously into magic I was at 4, and bought me a couple simple tricks for my 6th birthday, and I still have the old Nickles to Dimes trick. I had a magic kit and practiced all the time, but I was never confident enough to do a show (nor did I have what I thought to be sufficient apparatus) until when I was in High School. At that time, James and his partner Joe came to visit me when his wife and I did a summer tour through my county library system (this is back in the states by now) as clowns. I'd been doing balloon animals for some time, and I'm a natural ham, so clowning was pretty easy for me to get into, but it wasn't my thing. So Joe taught me card tricks, and I felt like suddenly a door had opened up to a new dimension. In one week I learned Svengali, Tapered, Locked, and self-working tricks, and I was hooked and started learning sleights. I remember palming entire packs of cards when my mom started being concerned with me taking them to school. When I got to college I started doing walk-around magic at a local chain italian restaurant, thanks to my contacts I'd built every summer doing shows in the library system. It was always a side job, I was going to be an art teacher. While in college, I started dating a girl who would later become my wife, who was a great sport and always let me practice my newest feats on her and save her comments for the end. She started assisting in my balloon animal gigs when I ended up having more children than hands, and eventually I proposed to her using a Cups and Balls routine (James helped me come up with that ringer). After that, my interest in magic started to dwindle, but I kept everything, just in case. I mean, how do you top a show so good, the girl of your dreams agrees to marry you? Then last deployment, a guy on the ship starts talking about some magician he saw on TV. I casually mention I know how the trick works, and when he drills me for the method, I tell him I swore an oath back in the day to IBM's code of ethics (while I'm no longer a member, I remember a few... never repeat a trick, never reveal a secret). In disbelief, he demands a magic trick. I pulled out a pack of cards and... well, now I'm here. XD

Love it, thanks for sharing!
I got started around the age of 8 when my parents bought me a Mr. Magician magic set (if I recall, it was Bill Bixby) Boomer |
