I'm new to this site but I hear people are talking about Deep Astonishment. I have it and I have been Beta testing it for a few months. It's incredible the response I am getting.

I was on the phone a few days ago with Hank Lee's, and almost bought it sight unseen. They told me they were getting it in a few days, so the guy on the phone couldn't even tell me about it.
But then I spoke to a friend who works at Tannen's; he told me it got a poor review in Genii Magazine (although he hadn't seen it either). Hearing this caused me to hold off, until it made it into wider circulation. So, may I impose upon you and ask that you post a more detailed review? I'd like to hear the good and bad. And to anybody else who read the Genii review: what was the main gripe? Do you agree? Thanks!

It has never been reviewed in Genii or any other publication.

Today (June 24) is the day that Cliff James, the distributor, is supposed to begin shipping Deep Astonishment. The decks were to be picked up from the printer over the weekend. I have it on order from Hank Lee, and as soon as I get it, I certainly plan to place a review.
Cliff tells me that later in the year they will release a "professional" version. The wallet will be leather, and the cards which are pulled out of it with the spectator's word lettered on them will be blank cards.

A "professional" version? You mean, a better version? Why would they just not wait and release the best version they possibly could? Perhaps Yendor could provide us with some answers as well as a breakdown as to what exactly takes place during this effect. The description seems just a little too clean. But I could be wrong.

If they were to supply a leather wallet with every set, then the price would have to be much higher. This way, we'll get a version we can do, that works well, etc. For those that really like the effect, the leather wallet will be a good investment.
If you want to know more about it, then read Paul's "Anything Deck" from the Astonishment books. The new "Deep Astonishment is an improved version of that. Many who are already doing the anything deck report that they like it very much and it's a real fooler. If you think about how that works, and read the Deep Astonishment ads carefully, you'll see the improvements, and maybe get an idea of what is involved. I think that this is going to be a very strong effect and that it will sell well.

Just got an e-mail from Cliff James. The Deep Astonishment sets were shipped to dealers today on schedule. Some may have it as early as tomorrow. (June 25th.)

Deep Astonishment has not yet hit the review area of Genii. The review was of a trick called Astonish Mints. Since I have been beta testting Paul Harris's Deep Astonishment for several months, I can tell you it is as clean as it sounds. There are no slights and when you remove the cards from the wallett and spell your spectators magic or special word, you can't believe the response. I won't go into a description since I see Cliff James has done that but I will be glad to answer any questions you may have. For those of you doing The Anything Deck, this new version is a real killer. I've had people scream, turn around and walk away, or just stant with their mouths open. I even got hired by a guest at a party I was performing at to entertain at his because of Deep Astonishment. What a pleasure it has been testing it.

It just didn't seem clean enough for me(I'm not a card guy, to say the least), but what an effect. I'll definitely put "Deep Astonishment" on my A list. Best thoughts, John Smetana |
