I had recently purchased a magic collection from someone on the Café. It came with an effect called "The Super Walking Knot", it had no instructions with it. I want to resell it and need them, the seller said he could not find them.
In the interim someone on the Café had a lot of magic for sale (including the walking knot), so I sent the seller a PM asking if he could send me a copy of the instructions for that effect stating, I have the rope, but no instructions. I will pay for a copy and shipping. His response was, "I guess my conscience would allow me to send these for $35 in paper form -- or I could make PDF Scans for $25." I asked how many copies there were and he stated he thought about four. I answered and said, "I was just wondering why the high cost for a couple copies? $35.00 for four pages?" His answer was, "I am not selling "just copies." I am assuming you have the rights to the trick -- and am charging for my time and effort. I have not asked how you got this -- I assume used or without instructions, Instructions are in many ways the method and intellectual soul of the trick and often much more than the actual cash value of "copies." I explained to him I could prove I had the rope and would send pictures or an explanation of how it worked and I told him, "I am not aware that I need "rights to the trick" I was really under the impression that the Magic Café was for "Magicians helping Magicians" not magicians making money off another magician for making a couple copies and calling it a charge for "my time and effort" Of course I never got the instructions from him. I thought he was very rude and in no way willing to help. I would appreciate any thoughts on the above. Thanks, Rennie

Dang, not good. Maybe I'm just way too nice, but there's been a few times through the years that someone needed copy's of instrucions for a trick that I happen to have and I've sent them a copy for free. I agree with you, I always thought the main idea with this forum is to help each other out.
Best of luck to you. Bob. |

Hang on. While I believe the described request in the original post was exorbitant, the "time and money" thing is valid. I help people out like this all the time if I can at no charge - they just have to prove they own the effect and not be a shady character. However, I just received a request to copy or scan a very large instruction booklet. First, this is a copyright infringement (I think, which is something I need to consider). Second, in order to accommodate this request it would have cost me a bit at Staples (I spend enough there ), and second it would have taken me maybe a couple of hours at the store (drive there, wait for the copies, spend money on pens, note pads and other crap I always seem to buy, and then drive home). I did offer to answer questions, but I had to regretfully decline this request which I hated to do, but the ask was just too big for me. So - a lot of times this is situational IMO.
The response to the OP was lame though.

I only needed 4 copies which I offered to pay postage and copy fees (not the ridiculous amount he asked for)in your case he wanted an entire book copied and I agree, that was asking a little too much! So if I asked you to copy 4 pages of instructions for me, you would not do it? Remember, "Magicians helping Magicians" and by the way I offered to prove to him that I had the trick.

As long as their is nothing "shady" going on and the ask is reasonable, I will help. I think most here would which is great. I have had some sketchy requests on occasions - basically I won't do ANYTHING that takes money out of a creator or artists pocket and I can sniff those asks out immediately. Other than that, its all about good will, right?

The guy was just taking advantage of me and trying to make a few bucks. I will never deal with him again. Everyone I had ever asked a favor of on the Café, has been more than happy to help.

On a slight drift away ..
On several occasions I have made copies of things and sent them to people -- only to have them complain about the "poor quality" of the scan. One asked if I could redo the scans with the borders straight so that he could see it on this smartphone easier. On another occasion I stated that the book was packed during a move and I would look for it in about a week. Every day I received increasingly nasty emails about it being unfair for me to get him exited and then leave him hanging. When I finally scanned it and sent it off I heard nothing. About six months later he made another request based on a different Post. I asked about the first document. He replied, "Oh, I lost interest and never read it." Maybe if I had charged $35 ...

Rennie?
Hello? I think he's gone. Lost interest. I think I've wasted about $35 worth of my time here. :) KJ |
