I want to be able to charge myself with electrostatic energy (like in the lighting fluorescent effect). Where can I buy a small device that could do that? I know Hank Lee's sells them for 250$ or so, but I'm interested in the device itself and I want to buy from the manufacturer (I believe this device is called TESLA Coil). I need it to be small and fit into my pocket. any info regarding this device will be appreciated.
Thanks, Nimrod , Israel |

Ebay auctions list a Violet Ray device and these are plentiful and go for about $40. The problem is that they are corded and may not suit your purposes, tho they will produce the many of the effects you want, including being able to light a Zippo cigarette lighter by touching it with your finger...
They are safe, but you should be alcohol free for days before using these on yourself. The pocket models would be worth the money if they worked as well as the corded devices. Instant Electric Act!

I think you're looking for a Van de Graaf machine, not a Tesla coil. The tesla coil produces a high-voltage high-frequency charge that could light up a fluorescent tube in the next room. The Van de Graaf machine is the one that you commonly see at Science Centres, where you put your hand on the ball and it makes your hair stand on end. I don't think either can fit into your pocket, though.
I've seen practical joke devices in the novelty stores - pens or lighters that would give a brief shock to anyone using it - might be able to light up a flourescent tube briefly depending on the principles involved. |
