Hi,
This morning, I got a request from a principal to perform at a small assembly for her school next month. I agreed to do the show (this would be the biggest show I've performed before). In her email, the principal also mentioned that I "Will need to provide references and testimonials as well as police clearance (such as fingerprinting or approval letter from at least one local school system.)" Where exactly would I get this police clearance from? I've searched the internet for this, but there are so many options that I'm not sure which one would work. Does anyone know which form most schools require you to fill out? (I'm from Virginia and the school is in Maryland, if that info is relevant.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Drew |

There is a federal FBI background check, though that may be overkill and a state check is probably fine and less expensive. Go to the state maryland school system site, the one that licenses teachers, and look up requirements for getting a teachers license. There will probably be 2 or 3 checks required and they will have the links and info you need. Or just ask the guy that booked you.

I've never been asked to provide one. Rather, they have me fill out an information sheet - usually varies from school to school in Oklahoma. Dan has the right idea - ask the person who booked you.

Just point the principal to your Megan's list profile.

In some jurisdictions the clearance is non-transferable, so the school has to apply for it on your behalf. Your best bet is to phone a local school and ask them direct what the procedure is. Don't phone the school that hired you, as that might show your level of experience. Phone a neighbouring school. But do it fast; you don't know how long the paperwork takes.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I emailed her back asking if she has more (specific) information - but no reply yet.
I will also try calling a neighboring school if she doesn't reply soon. Thanks! Drew |

Here is the info for Virginia. http://www.vsp.state.va.us/CJIS_Criminal_Record_Check.shtm looks like it take 15 dollars and 2 weeks to clear. However sometimes this can be slower. I had one done in Oregon, and it took a month, because Vermont is really slow to respond.

I have used my background check for USA Track and Field for other purposes also, so if you are a member of some organization who works with children or the disabled, you might be able to get a background check through them.
Also, someone told me that a Global Entry card can serve as a background check, of sorts.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Once I had a library that required me to go to my local police department (not the same municipality that the library was located) and get a background check. The local police department sent a letter that said I had never been arrested by that particular police department. That was sufficient for the library. It was the silliest thing. I think it cost me $8.
Here, the local school system requires you to get a vendor badge that is required of any vendor who goes on school property. It's all done through the school system and requires a background check. The school system tells you exactly where to get your fingerprints, where to get your picture taken, where to send the forms, etc. This one cost a little more than $8. |

I had to do a police check a couple of times especially for schools. The cost was reasonable.
Toronto has many centers for accidents reports and other infractions and the last time I had to get one, that was the place that I went. I don't know if that's how they do it in the USA Ricky |

I am always disturbed when a question is asked and the members on the Café take the time out of their day to answer the question and the original poster never returns for the updates.
I question why I even bother to look up the answer, cut & paste it in a post to the thread. |

Howie,
Thanks for your concerns and I hope you aren't too "disturbed" by my lack of response to every post (Do I reply twice to a double post?). I appreciate everyone's replies. I am working on getting "fingerprinted" by the school system. I am a very busy person, so I hope you understand the slow response. -Drewer |

Drewer;
I am not disturbed by you not answering every post in the thread; if you start a thread asking for assistance, it would be polite to check in every few days for the answers the sincere members here have taken the time to post. Here is why I was disturbed; I actually took the time and spent about fifteen minutes searching the Internet to find the Maryland details on registering for a background check and sending a link by PM. which you opened seven days later and never even bothered to respond back with a Thank You. I am also disturbed by your last post that explains to us I you are a very busy person, and you wanted us to understand the slow response. No, I don't understand your slow response, if you can't return for answers, don't post questions that you will not read for seven days. So, from here on, I will make note that you are a very busy person and far to busy to return to look at the replies on any threads that you start. |

Howie,
Thanks for your response and I appreciate you taking your time to help me. I aplogize that I don't have time to constantly be on here. I appreciate any responses and will continue to ask for help, despite you not helping me anymore. Personally I don't think you should target people for not having the same computer habits as yourself. I try my best to reply to this useful resource, but I can't always get on everyday. I hope your ego can forgive me for not saying thank you. I do appreciate it though. And I'm sorry for distrurbing you by posting a reply (which is what you wanted me to do in the first place!). Have a wonderful day, Howie. Thanks, Drewer |

All I pointed out was that if you need help and you ask for help here on the Café, at least come back on and check in every few days to read what the members here that took the time to post answers and see if anyone has come up with a solution. I am not targeting you; you have the impression that I asked you to sign on every day; this is not true; I asked that if you post a question, that you return to read the replies. I will let you know that to post a question and not be interested enough to read the replies with suggestions is rude and disrespects the members on the Café. I wrote my post to let you know how much of a fool I feel like by taking time to help you and send you PM's that did not even bother to read after seven days. You're not too busy to ask for help; you're just too busy to say "Thank You". |
