HI guys,
Attached is an image of my very first balloon dogs..... Stop laughing!!!!! lol. I am obviously new to balloon animals lol. My problem I seem to be having is that I always end up with a huge tail. I followed two different tutorials, one Balloon
School DVD and the 2nd Balloon Animals Channel on Youtube. In the 3 versions I adjusted the length of the uninflated section of the balloon

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong.

Thank you

Gadi

I don't think there's anything you're specifically doing wrong. I think you just need to keep proportions in mind as you're twisting.

For instance, in the photos above, if you're going to make the legs that long, I would make the nose and ears all a little longer to start with, and that will mean less tail left by the time you reach it. Especially in the white model, I think the head (nose and ears) look quite small for the size of the rest of the animal.

Other options:

1. Don't inflate the balloon as much as you've been doing. Then you could even make a poodle tail if you want.
2. Once the figure is finished, if you don't like the size of the tail, you can always let some air out of the end of the balloon if you want. Bite or pinch or prick a tiny hole in the nipple end and let some air out, then tie it off when it's the size you want. Then trim the knot close. It *does* mean you'll have a small knot at the end of the tail, but I don't think that makes a big difference to anyone except other balloon twisters. Smile
3. Give the finished tail some shape by curling it. Some dogs have long tails. Smile

Hi Gadi,
I agree with Josho's comments.
There is nothing specifically wrong with what you are doing. Over time (more practice) you will get to know how much of the balloon to leave uninflated. Each model will require different lengths to be left uninflated.
Just keep practicing. <grin>

When I first started, I had to tell myself to inflate the balloon less than I thought I needed to. I think beginners want to blow the balloon up nearly all the way, but often 1/2 or 2/3 is plenty of air (depending on what you're making).

If you are using a hand pump, you can experiment by inflating it 3 pumps worth or air, then 4 pumps, 5 pumps, etc. until you figure out how much is the right amount. Eventually, you won't need to count the pumps, but that helps some people when they are starting out.

Thank you guys and gal for the advice. I will experiment with different inflations. Karen, your suggestion is a different way to look at how much inflation should a balloon have for a balloon animal. I will experiment with different inflations. Hopefully my dog will look more normal lol. Now onto the "giraffe " Smile

Once again thanks for the advice

Dude, Keep the tail long, in fact, make the rest of the dog a little smaller & the tail even longer. Thenwhen you give it to a little kid, explain that it's the 'leash' and show them how they can now 'walk' their dog!
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.
