Hi Everyone!
Just in case you are unaware Midnight Syndicate has recently released a spooky Christmas CD called "Christmas: A Ghostly Gathering" and I must say it may be my favorite of all their CD's. It's a mixture of traditional music as well as several new pieces, including a Krampus themed selection to name but one example. A lovely dark holiday treat as you sit around the fireplace telling scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago. http://www.midnightsyndicate.com/buymusic.htm Chad |

Just thought I'd bump this thread up in case it got lost in the Halloween shuffle...this may be my favorite Christmas album of all time...and my favorite MS CD as well. Anyone else listened to this yet?

I wasn't sure what to expect from the album when I ordered. But I use Midnight Syndicate music in almost all of my performances, so I wanted to support them either way. I'm very pleasantly surprised by the album. It is quirky and creepy -- my brain has trouble trying to juxtapose happy christmas thoughts with haunting music -- a disturbingly good time!. I think my favorite is their spookification of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. But there's lots of other good tunes on this album. Would make wonderful background music for one's performance of Krampusnacht -- the album includes Night of the Krampus!

I have a lot of great Christmas music. I also have a lot of crossover Halloween/Christmas music. Most of it (such as A Merry Monster Christmas by Len Maxwell , Monster Christmas Mash, Tales from the Crypt’s Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas, Halloween Scarols by Opus I, and A Very Scary Solstice and An Even Scarier Solstice by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society) take a comedic approach.
The Midnight Syndicate collection s is a mixture of Christmas tunes given a refreshingly different, whimsical yet eerie twist, and also includes some haunting original carols that are ideal for us this season. “Christmas Overture” sets the tone with dashes of recognizable themes given a macabre twist. “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies” is faithful to the melody of Tchaikovsky's classic, but with a winter wind blowing through and an eerie sound distorting the notes. “Carol of the Bells” is a brilliantly dark twist on a Ukranian classic carol that has been covered by most other genres. “Night of the Krampus” is a delightful original number by Edward Douglas, founder of Midnight Syndicate, with a crack of a whip that brings Bad Santa to mind. “Angels We Have Heard on High” is instantly recognizable although it turns the traditional French Carol into a fantastic funeral dirge. The traditional :Greensleeves,” sometimes credited to Henry VIII, has bells ringing out and a creaking organ transmuting the number. “Up On the Housetop”is one of my favorites and seems to have sinister forces at work on the roof above. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is still mighty festive, with breakthroughs of happy notes amongst the somber. It is one of the least darkest, yet still an original cover. “The Coventry Carol” is a favorite 16th century traditional English carol; this version features bells and a creaking organ. “Little Helpers” is a mischievous original by Douglas, painting Santa’s minions more like gremlins than elves. “Sing We Now Of Christmas” is an obscure Christmas tune, and in my opinion the weakest on the CD. “Winter Storm,” an original by Gavin Goszk, the second half of Midnight Syndicate, offers discordant sounds of a storm blowing up around the listeners and is the least melodic of the collection, but still effective. “Into the Stillness” is another not-so-common carol given a spot-on frightening take. “The Parade of the Tin Soldiers” is again instantly recognizable, but given a horroresque makeover. :Everywhere Everywhere Christmas Tonight” is yet another obscure carol given the Midnight Syndicate touch. The bonus track, “Christmas at Midnight”, is pure Midnight Syndicate in that it seems to be a soundtrack to a spooky Christmas movie, and will be my anthem this season. All in all, the music has a seasonal Christmas vibe but wonderfully reimagined by the duo in their eerie original style. Not at all a mockery of the holiday but instead a product of beauty. As an added bonus to those who will be performing eerie shows during the holiday season, Midnight Syndicate does not charge licensing fees for the use of their music in your attractions. |

I just picked this up for use as background score in a theatrical production of "The Mistletoe Bough". It is perfectly suited to the task and the band's willingness to share tracks free of licensing fees is rare and wonderful.

I shall be using this lovely album starting today for my run of Haunted Christmas programs. It is the most perfect Christmas music for said occasion - and they are super nice folks as Perkins mentioned.

With this merry gathering of recommendations, many of my favourite people indeed, how could I refuse? Just purchased. Looking forward to hearing Christmas done in the 'scary ghost stories' mode.
Thanks for the recommendation, all, BC
