Many lifers here know about Scott Guinn. But, a little background for the fresh fish here. (Sorry, I just recently watched The Shawshank Redemption). Anyhow, Scott was very young when he was born; this is a fact that did not escape the notice of the attending obstetrician. Years passed and Scott grew up and in time was diagnosed as being a magician. Following the loving advice of his family, Scott became a working performer and much to his chagrin, an inmate, er, member of The Magic Café. Scott was always gracious in helping other magicians and his magic is a prime example of subtlety over difficult sleight of hand. Scott left the Café for awhile and became an ordained minister. So, imagine my surprise when I received a PM from Scott with news of a new routine! If you've never tried any of Scott's magic, this is a GREAT routine with which to start. So, let's talk about!

The new routine is titled "Designated Driver." It is the "Hallucination" plot generally credited to Eddie Clever and as Scott reminds the reader, "was worked to the nth degree by Ed Marlo. I would just add that Theo Annemann published his own gimmicked version in The Jinx which was "modernized by Harry Anderson in his marketed effect called "The Shadow Card."

Effect: You explain that you have a sure-fire way to decide which person in a group enjoying a few drinks should be the designated driver. After a deck of cards is thoroughly shuffled, one person cuts to a card. Three different people look at this card and commit it to memory. When you ask them all to tell everyone which card they saw, you get three different answers--each person names a different card! The card is turned over and shown that it doesn’t match any of the cards named! In fact, none of the named cards are even in the deck! (description verbatim from the review copy Scott sent to me).

I want to highlight a few important points:

1. There is a little bit of sleight of hand but nothing beyond the reach of the advanced beginner.

2. No palming

3. No gaffs or gimmicks

4. Use ANY deck

5. The deck is thoroughly shuffled by a spectator before the routine begins.

Scott's approach to the Hallucination plot is simply brilliant. Every action is motivated and serves method beautifully. My friend Paul Green offers an alternate handling for the end and it is also excellent. I prefer Paul's ending but Scott's approach is well reasoned. I don't want to go into any particulars. This is a digital product that will sell for $10.00 and it is ten smackers well spent.

A few caveats: you do NOT want to perform this for inebriated spectators; obvious but I thought I'd mention it as inebriated people are lousy at remembering their own names. Additionally, Scott reminds the reader that this routine is a great way to advise pub patrons about the importance of designated drivers in a very humorous and magical way.

The routine as written requires a sports jacket to be worn but if you are wearing a jacket - and many workers do - this really is an anytime anywhere effect that plays beautifully. The spectators are at first shocked then burst into laughter when they each mention a different card. And you don't need to ask them to turn over the card on the table - they will POUNCE. And when THAT one is not the card and in fact NONE of the cards they thought they saw are nowhere in the deck, you really have a triple punch effect that you serve you well.

I mentioned that there is sleight of hand but again, there is nothing knucklebusting in this routine. That said, please do give the routine the study it deserves. If you do, you have a fun and powerful addition to your working repertoire.

I for one am very happy that the magic bug has bitten Scott. Silly Shawshank references aside, Scott was one of the pillars of this community and he has been missed by many. I am so pleased to welcome him back and to tell all of you about this very beautiful approach to a classic plot in card magic.

Welcome back Scott!!!

Hi Zedd,

I sent Vlad a pre-release draft of the routine for his honest feedback. I still have to shoot the photos for it. Once that is done, it will be available, likely sometime toward the end of next week. The routine will be available as a PDF directly from me for $10. I haven't made any other arrangements yet, but it may find its way onto the site of the leading purveyor of magic ebooks.

Thank you, Vlad, for your kind words and the review!

By the way, this makes a great combination with my "Repeat Pantsposition" routine, available from Lybrary.com. Not trying to push my stuff, as Chris at Lybrary bought the rights, and I don't make any money off of its sales. But if you like my magic, a solid, strong, commercial and cohesive set that I highly recommend is "Pants" (for short), followed by "Driver" and then closing with my coin routine "That's How WE Do it!" (The latter is also available at Lybrary.) This set will slay 'em, and is quite unique. It almost certainly will be unlike the standard routines most of the club magicians in your area are likely doing--and even the pros for that matter.

Hi guys!

Sorry for the delay. Life steps in and stuff takes longer than you anticipate.

This eBook is done and will be available and showing up on Lybrary.com in the very near future. I've added an alternate ending where the three named cards are produced from three different pockets. I really like this one, and I think you will, too. It is entertaining, commercial and astonishing.

The fastest way to find any of my stuff, new or old, is to go to my page at Lybrary: http://www.lybrary.com/scott-f-guinn-m-235.html

I look forward to hearing how this plays for you!

Hi Scott (and Vlad) great to see yo putting this out. I was wondering about the jacket limitation. Is it an absolute must to do the routine? Either way I'm gonna purchase it just because I like the premise.

No, not an absolute must. It just facilitates the kicker ending.

Folks, to celebrate Scott's return to sharing his very best routines I have put his DVD "Great Scott! It's Magic!" at half price for the next week. Was $29 and is now only $14.50 http://www.lybrary.com/great-scott-its-magic-p-254015.html It is one of those DVDs that deliver value not only glitzy flitzy video editing.

Here's what Scotland's legendary Peter Duffie had to say about this routine:

"If you are looking for a cool card effect that will leave your audience entertained and completely mystified, then you should check out Scott F. Guinn's Designated Driver... now!" - Peter Duffie

I, like Vlad77, received a review copy of this routine and, though I've not actually performed it yet, thought I would offer my thoughts.

Vlad77 has laid out all the details of the routine. The fact is that this is a commercial routine that has an excellent presentations built into it. In the past I've experimented with routines similar to this, but only using two cards, rather than three, so I vouch for how funny spectators in the group find it when people are naming different cards (in this case), or all "accidentally" choosing the same card. It's a premise that works really well.

There isn't a great deal of knuckle busting sleights involved with Designated Driver either, though I admit to struggling with the main "move", but I may either slightly change that, or persist until I master it, whichever my patience dictates.

You'll need a bit of practice to get the Paul Green ending down smooth, but, again, it's just a case of practicing (and even then, it's an optional ending - you don't HAVE to do it).

Once I've got the "move" down to a decent level, I can see myself using this often. It's got a direct magic effect with a strong presentation that will play well for small groups, but has enough visibility and fun to play larger than that too!
