While deleting my old PM's to help save time and space on the forum, I was thinking about other ways to save. I'm not a computer specialist but it seems to me that a lot of space is held by old posts. I see some of them go back to last year. Wouldn't it help if after a period of time, these were perhaps archived somehow. For instance is it necessary to keep posts on "new arrivals" from the beginning of time? As a relatively new member, it was nice to go back and see some of the posts but wasn't really necessary. Maybe if posts were removed after 4-6 months for example. Just a thought.

Hi Dave,
Actually, "space" isn't a big problem. We've got plenty of that. The reason for clearing out your old PM's has more to do with cpu usage. Every time someone goes to look at his or her PM's, the database has to search through all 8,000+ PM's to find the ones that belong to that particular member. Fewer PM's in the database mean fewer that it has to search through, and less strain on the server. Every little bit helps! Mary |

There's also some very, very good info in those old posts. I'd be a shame to lose ready access to the info.

I agree Riff, about losing valuable information. This was just an idea to help speed up response time.
Everyone could save the old messages they wanted on their hard drive for reference later. For instance, I am not particularly interested in the mentalism forum, but have to wait for that forum to load up. If everyone knew that messages would be deleted after a certain period of time, they could "save" what they wanted. I enjoyed reading the old stuff as well when I first joined. As I said, this was just a suggestion for review if it would help anything. Dave

Dave,
thanks for the suggestions, I am always open to ideas that others may have. However, we will be keeping ALL the messages in The Cafe, and are currently working on a solution that should not only speed the forums up, but add a host of new features as well. Stay tuned!
