I like it Al.... Could be done with or without a table, hence suitable for the stand-up performer which suits me. No gaffs, everything totally examinable. As I see it, the hands can be shown clean before and after the effect too. I love the final "clean-up" - very clever.

Very nice routine. Really...
I don't think that showing the 2 faces of the coin can make a better trick because in the spectator's mind, they are real coins. In addition, if you take care of the handling, you will remark that the Spectator can see the 2 faces of each coin. But there is no emphazise on this fact because there are no need to do it. Simple and effective |

I was worried about you. But you got it. Based on the babble around here, most believe I only work sitting at a table. Excalibur was developed for the kind of work you do. The prime reason I am working on this kind of magic is that most books sell to guys that want to do that kind of magic. I attempt to put out products that people want. Here are some thoughts. One of my fav tricks is ring off pencil. Been doing it for 40 years. It is not even my trick. I call it Ring n Pencil on amazon dot com. When I do a show, this is in it, sit down or whatever. Perhaps my most powerful trick is expansion of texture. Do it anywhere, anytime, surrounded or not. This trick is so powerful, the audience does not respond. At the end of the routine, the helper just stares into space motionless. One of his or her friends must take the props out of the helper’s hands to show everyone what happened. A very strange thing happens. I do not get applause and no one seems to give me credit for what happened. It is all focused on the props and attempts to help the helper. One day, I got a call from some programmer friends. They wanted to get together at a sports bar. At the end of the call, my friend said, “Bring magic.” Well, I just jammed three ropes for Prof Nightmare and some coins and a hank. I met my friends and soaked up a few beers. At some point, Ed said, “Show her a trick.” He pointed at the waitress that was setting another bowl of popcorn onto the table. Well, I don’t do tricks for waitresses’. That is a no-no. They have a job and it is not watching magic. But, I was cornered. I did Prof Nightmare. I use short ropes and get in and get out. No long drawn out patter. After some oo-wow and all that stuff, she ran away and brought over another waitress to see the trick. Then another and so on. In this setting I was working while sitting in a chair while she was standing over me. Normally I do not do walk around. I am a big guy and I think I am just to overbearing. My best performance style is at an off site room where I have my own territory. Other than that, I set up a table in the main area of a party on the side and invite people over to see the magic. At first, going is slow. But after the first few, the table is jammed and I work all night. There is something unique about Excalibur. The routine works just as well with folding money. You can ask someone if they have a bill. Whatever they bring out, you bring forth a bill of different value. Then do a kind of you do as I do folding the bills. Then do Excalibur as with coins. Well, I just thought I would share that.

I am anxious to see what you come up with. Shanghai Escape was an experiment to make a very direct coin penetration. It did not come out as I had planned. The falling coin picks up energy as it falls and transfers the energy to the ribbon. That makes it whip around wildly. If you put some paint on the end of the ribbon for easy threading, the whipping gets really bad. I wanted a nice long ribbon but the physics of the situation prevented that. So, I am curious to see what you came up with. However, as I type this an idea comes to mind. Unfortunately, my ideas can take years to mature.

Hi Al,
Sorry you were worried about me. Just a full-time working pro from over the pond who is always looking for great working routines to enhance his repertoire that's all. This routine is certainly that. I did send you a pm regarding using this effect, not sure if you got it?

The key to this is that the spectator takes the coin out of your hand. You don't push the coin into their hand as most do. In fact, based on comments about this routine, some do not understand how this routine works. Perhaps you should ask MB, he seems to get it.
By the by, is close up performance your only job? I wrote a book on how to make money with magic. I attempted to get the real pros take on this. I tapped magicians in the Twin Cities but that did not work well. Suzanne the magician was a great help. But the others had day jobs or did not have the time to talk to me. Would you be interested in supplying some information for the book. It is now on sale on amazon dot com. I would be willing to redo the book with your help.

Perhaps it is not a matter of understanding, but of the relative advantages of one approach over another.
Your novel approach relies on inference that a coin is now in their hand, and a belief that this coin is the one previously seen in the performer's hand. There is no coin now on his hand, and the other type coin is still on the table. The switch occurs during the take and the placing hand cannot be shown empty. A different approach has the indicated coin visible on their fingers before closing the hand. This visual confirmation is stronger than inference. The placing hand can be shown empty because the switch occurs later. It is not matter of which is "better," but which will support the entire effect or routine with regard to audience, setting and expectations. Other questions such as "which coin is placed first?" or "one coin at a time?" might influence that choice. For example, if a large percentage of an audience has seen you do this effect before using the first method, It might be wise to use the second for the repeat. On some thread Al indicated that an effect might be "Second Stage" or something. This is great! What effect preceded this one? How focused is the audience attention? Has this spectator participated in an effect before? Wiil the audience accept his person as a witness to the action? Often we cannot have all those answers. We must prepare several effects using different methods and then chose the best one by instinct and experience. Lacking that we rely on the experience of the creator and performer until we have better, personal evidence. Hopefully, we do not make a decision based on the quality of a video snippet or performer's age, weight, style of dress, etc. We must imagine how the effect will unfold before our selected audience, role-play the various effects in our minds and then practice to automaticity. In the end, the approach that "feels right" to us is the one to choose. Al's chapters on "knowing here the coin is" are invaluable. Which approach will enable you to project "know which coin is in their hand?" I am glad to learn of this new approach (grab from me). I don't know if I will use it, but the exploration will make my final effect stronger regardless.

Hi Funsway - as this routine doesn't use any CS gimmicked coin the visual affirmation in the hand is impossible. If this visual confirmation with the coin in the hand is what you are looking for, then this routine isn't for you.
Al has simply shown an ungimmicked routine which just uses just two coins. As with most magic, there are pros and cons using different methods, but for me this is a very nice routine using just two ungimmicked coins.

I clearly said this routine "was for me" -- just not all of the time. I am not "looking for anything" -- except new options and reenforcement of old ones. For me, performance magic is a dynamic process and not a static one. I learn something for every presentation. It is all "for me." Al's comment makes no sense at all, but that's OK. I am sure if I saw it performed live I might be astonished. As it is I can only appreciate the idea and creativity and skill. Don't know that "being fooled" has any part of that.

Again with the insults and shouting...
Maybe you and your sycophants can start your own coin magic sub forum where you post awful variations on good tricks and people that don't know anything about magic can blow smoke up your bot bot and you can leave this place to let people actually behave like grown ups? |
