I remember wearing a round pin-on badge that said, "I Make Rabbits". When someone inquired about it I would slide into the Peter Rabbit Goes To Town/Multiplying Rabbits routine.

I tend to wait until asked if among friends and family. If they ask, then I will do something. If not, then we just enjoy whatever we are doing and have a few laughs!
Though, last Sunday, we were round at a friend's house with quite a few of us. The kids started showing some tricks they had learnt to obvious applause! Then one of my friend's did a couple including "Out of this World", which obviously got shocked looks! Anyway, it led me onto to doing a couple of quite powerful ones, including "The Butterfly Effect!" using the same borrowed deck. Then I got up, poured myself some wine and after they all got over the "How the hell did you do that?" we carried on with the rest of the night, and left them wanting more - "Another time!!" So, agree with the statement - "Never force it!". But I do look for opportunities, and wait until it is the right time if one appears! |

Julie the pin idea sounds great. Mind if I steal that. It will actually be ironic when I start breeding rabbits

I don't know if it is original with me, but from my point of view you are more than welcome to use it.

If you want people to ask you could always wear a shirt with an ace of spades or any card on it or where something that says you are a magician.

I face this issue all the time... I am ready to perform but no one asks. Well if they're close friends, I generally say that I'm working on something and want their opinion. But if they're not that close, I never bring up magic.

Here's an idea someone gave me many years ago that's great if you work in an office. Bake cookies and bring them in for your coworkers. Send out an email with the subject line "Cookies & Magic". Invite your colleagues to come over and have a cookie and ask you to show them some magic! The nice thing with this is that by telling them to ask you, really what you're doing is you're asking to show them magic in a way that will filter out anyone who doesn't want to see it. I thought this was a clever idea and it worked quite well for him.

I pay cashiers with a $1 bill regardless of the amount. Then they look confused. I look confused back. I tell them its a $20. They look confused'er. Then I ask for it back and do a quick bill switch.
Had a lady a few weeks ago then refuse to take that fake $20....ooops. Anyway, I get to perform and have some fun. They usually call someone else over and say do it again at which point I do something else because they have my $20 in the register now.... It is a way to keep practicing from time to time. It's all TT stuff so it is very varied and fun. And they never ask. |
