ZV, like any trick, you have to decide if it fits you. Having said that, it is well worth picking up. It is a steal at $6. I am still playing with it, but don't regret the purchase.
Hey Devin, thanks for releasing the PDF!

I don't have Williams version, but in the manuscript, Devin talks anout improving the handling to be more deceptive. The performance demo on the website (Williams version) looks fishy to me prior to the linking of the 3 ropes. Anyone else think so?
I would really like to see a performance of Devin or someone who knows his routine/method.

I love rope magic,so I am going to purchase this. Devin's Penguin Lecture was filled with a lot of good stuff, and I am expecting the same with this.

When you love rope magic you have to find a copy of "Jean Merlin - Rope series (1-4" by Jean Merlin. In it you will find wonderful magic with unprepaired ropes. There are only illustrations; no text. These lecture notes were published in 1973.
In series no 4 ("More rope for you") there are two routines using the same principle as used in the routine in the link above. I used this linking-principle with ropes only and in a ring and rope routine, all unprepaired. |

I purchased and received my set. 3 differently coloured ropes and 2 photo copied pages. It took me about 30 minutes to get he basic handling down and have consistent success. That night my friend Jason Palter came over for dinner and I showed it to him and he really liked it. The next day it took it to the local magic store, The Browsers Den of Magic and showed it to Jeff Pinsky the owner and he liked it as well.
Thanks Devin.

I purchased this a while ago, and at first, I had the hardest time trying to figure out how to do it. Then, I slowed down, followed the directions step-by-step, and it works beautifully. This is like the Trapdoor Card in the sense that even when you know how it is done, you are still in awe when you perform it. I love this effect.
Devin mentions John Palfreyman developed the method in the 1950s. I have not been able to track down a source for the original explanation. A friend of mine just picked up with the Wayne Raeke document. I would be interested in learning about the unlinking part. I have developed, independently, a way to unlink the ropes and would love to know if it is the same method. I also have a surprise kicker at the end. With my additions, I have created an ungimmicked linking and unlinking ropes routine. I purchased some colored rope from Amazon, and though Devin says to remove the core, I do not. This rope does not have a typical core, but it works really well. Because of the additions I have come up with, I was trying to research and go back to the beginning. I did find, and purchase, the explanation for Fabian's Grand Linking Ropes (not sure when the effect was developed, but it was printed in 1989). It is pretty close to Devin's method. In my reworking of the effect, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the get-ready for linking the ropes was much closer to Fabian's method than Devin's. I am grateful to Devin for bringing this effect to market, and I really love it. Devin does a better job of explaining how to get ready for the linking than in the Fabian effect, which I think was written up by the late Aldo Colombini. Any way, I am loving this effect and want to put together something with my touches. Like I said, my routine is closer to Fabian's than Devin's, but without him, I would still be using my gimmicked ropes, which I hardly ever use anymore. Bobby p.s. If anyone knows where I can track down the original method, I would appreciate it.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but how do you all sell linking ropes to the audience?
Linking rings are STEEL. They are impressive in their own right. Rope loops (especially cored rope) look kind of wimpy to me. Are ropes better for comedy? What does one do to try to make them seem to be miraculous? |

Opus,
In my magic shows, I set the stage (no pun intended) for an evening of magic with ordinary objects ... stuff around the house, things you can pick up, touch, feel ... I talk about how throughout history extraordinary things were done by ordinary people. And, I let them know I love rope magic. I use ordinary ropes in my effects, so the audience checks them out. So, it is not much "sell" as it is "just do." Bobby

On Lybrary.com some of the reviews point out that the manuscript is just teaching a move , not a full linking ropes routine. To me the problem with the effect is that it goes nowhere. You have three ropes examined and tied into loops, then you link them together. The End. If it were possible to link the ropes and then unlink them it might be more interesting. Someone had a linking rope routine out a few years ago where the three linked rope rings end up blending into a single long rope at the end. However, in that version the ropes could not be examined of course , as with standard Linking Ropes going back to the original E.J. Moore method. One review says: Quote:
"I would like to stress what the ad copy does not make clear: You are buying instructions for just a single move only, not a rope routine, and the move in question is not even original to the author. Another says: Quote: .
"There should be credit given to Dick Williams who published this idea back in 1994 in "Lights, Camera, Magic!" Williams later explained it with ropes from his TV show "Magicland" and credits Conrad "Connie" Bush for coming up with a similar idea many years before." Apparently a similar handling for no-gimmick linking ropes was also developed at various times by John Palfreyman , Wayne Raeke , Jean Merlin, and 'Fabian's Grand Linking Ropes' written up by Aldo Colombini (Fabian was a stage name used by Aldo Colombini) according to robwar0100: Quote:

There is also the King-King Linking Ropes that Supreme Magic put out , which is a different sort of gimmick than the commonly used m _ g _ _ t gimmick. . |
