Happy 2016 Everyone! I am releasing a new book that will be of interest to Spookies and Period Performers. Poe Pourri is a book of almost three hundred pages featuring over sixty routines, all based on the life or works of Edgar Allan Poe. Routines include platform, parlor, and close up performance pieces, seances, magic, mentalism, storytelling, and bizarre. The foreword is by Professor BC, who also handled the editing. Contributors include Larry Baukin, T Everett Bookings III, Eugene Burger, Marc Charisse, Chad Crews, Joe Daniels, Mathew Gostelow, Keith Black Hart, Misty Lee, Masklyn ye Mage, Max Maven, David Parr, Master Payne, Mark Piazza, Paul Prater, and more. The book will allow performers to add a Poe routine to their current repertoire or create an entire Poe show. Currently the book will only be available directly through the author. The book will be ready for shipping the end of this month. It will sell for $75 plus $6 shipping in the United States, with additional shipping costs to the rest of the universe (email me with queries). However, if ordered before January 13th, I am offering a prepublication price of $70 plus $6 shipping in the United States, $70 plus $10 shipping elsewhere, or $70 without shipping if I may bring your copy to you at the East Coast Spirit Sessions. Please PayPal the appropriate amount to jimmagus@comcast.net along with your snail mail address and I will get a copy out to you by the end of the month.
Also, stay tuned for a very limited illusion for Poe fans (there will be only 13 of them) that will debut at the East Coast Spirit Sessions. |

Jim has struck again.
In late November he sent me a copy to go over - for thirty-five years, we've done "critical eyes" for each other on spooky stuff. If you are even vaguely interested in Poe, you'll love this. It not only is a heck of a compilation of some neat routines by a lot of people, but a tremendous source about Poe and his life. Sprinkle some of this background info your own variations of ideas and it will certainly boost your believability factor with an audience. And, yes, it will take you more than one reading to really absorb all of this. Again that's a lot better than watching the political clowns juggling on TV. Oh, the illusion he refers to is fantastic and I'm very glad that its' release is going to be extremely limited. Think of this as Poe helping confuse mere mortals. TEB3/Lary/Traveler |

Y'all are in for a real treat with Brother Jim's latest release Poe Pourri... It's a serious and monumental tome, filled with routines and ideas from some of our finest master performers and creators (past and present).
To echo our esteemed Elder above, TEB3 (who contributed to Poe Pourri), Jim also sent me an advance copy back in November as well... Having had it in my hands for 2 months now, I've been biting my tongue until its release to share my thoughts on it ... Well, here we are (shipping starts at the end of January as Jim mentioned). At nearly 300 pages long, I'm still pouring through it, yet am striving to finish up an unsolicited and thorough review on it soon. That said, I highly recommend it, as I do all of Jim's timeless publications. Not only is Jim genuine and great human being, he has succeed in cementing himself as the Royal Scribe of Bizarre Magick. Well done sir! The book is dipped in metaphorical gold. If you're at all interested in Edgar Allen Poe then buy it, you won't regret it. Highly recommended! Those who know me, know that anything and everything I review and/or endorse is done so on my own will and volition. I only "big up" things that I think our community can benefit from. Keep it simple, teach it real. More is to be revealed... Advancing the Magik, from under the Shade Tree, ~ Nyama Possessor~

Having had the privilege to contribute to this in a small way I can say that it covers a plethora of effects based on the life and works of Poe. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read and has something for everyone in it. I look forward to discussing it around a table at ECSS in just a few weeks along with all things Poe and bizarre!
Get it - you won't regret it! Chad |

My new years resolution is to buy no more effects. But books are a horse of a different color. This is exactly my cup of tea. I will definitely pick this up.

I've only read about a third of it so far (it's huge!) and already I love it! Of course, I have contributions in it, so naturally I love it.
But what I'm finding fascinating isn't so much the 'magic trick' aspect but more so the routines' stories & historical information. Jim, you did a great job! |

Thank you all. Larry Baukin is not a member of the Magic Café, but this is what he had to say about the book:
"Just finished the fantastic Poe Pourri. I was happy to see routines using some of my favorite props such as the Haunted Key, Pegasus and the book tests such as 'Spirits of the Dead Dopps'. Your book is also my introduction to such treasures as the 'Spirits of the Dead' cards. Fine, sophisticated props, I'll be hunting down asap! And on top of everything else, I was amazed and more then impressed by both the width and depth of the research behind and comments accompanying such sections as 'PreShow and PostShow Music,' as well as the comprehensive treatment at the opening of the book of the life and works of Poe, inspiring a gallery of performance artists. I'd love to see them all! Some of the routines in the volume of particular interest to me, are 'The Loves of Edgar Allan Poe', 'The Kon Poe Seance' 'A Block from the House of Usher', And 'Fear the Reaper'. Just a sampling of what dark gems await the alert reader! So my friend, talk about a volume of forgotten lore. This is it. And because of your herculean efforts, this lore is truly nevermore to be forgotten, living and breathing in both the light and shadows of Magick with everlasting remembrance. Larry Baukin" |

I have a funny feeling this will be one of those overnight Classics. Books are really an amazing value these days.... Almost 300 pages with over 60 effects ... How does anyone beat that? Is this the Mind, Myth and Magick(1999) of our new Millennium?
Keep your eye on this Jim Magus character ... I think he's on to something.

I have read the final draft and this book is going to be Book of the Year for 2016! I will put my vote in now! This book has everything to create a dozen different Poe themed shows! Contributions from David Parr, Eugene Burger, Nick Compise, Paul Prater, Chad Crews, Black Hart, Max Maven, Dan Baines and so many more. Even Masklyn ye Mage came back from the grave, so you know this book is great!!!! I am not a Poe fan, but after reading through this book, I can say I am now!
Well Done Mr. Magus! Well Done! |

Jim,
Finally finished reading it. Really liked the historical references, although I'm betting nobody ever heard of the supposedly true events in my contributed routine. Lots of fascinating trivia for the Poe fans & lots of good routines & effects. |

Up here in the Scottish Highlands it is a cold, dark and dank day, or dreich we call it.
The postie (postman) has just arrived and left me a parcel, which as it turned out contains the perfect item for a day such as this. What did the parcel contain? Poe Pourri by our friend Jim Magus. It looks very good indeed. This afternoon I plan to sit by an open peat fire and as the darkness descends I will begin to read this delightful tome as the flickering flames send shadows dancing about the room. Perfect. Thank you Jim and very, very good luck with this. Yours in Darkness Keith Hart (The Black Hart)
