Awesome idea about the Omni deck give-away. (Makes we want to practice that effect more.)
As someone else said, certainly don't perform anything you're not completely comfortable with. I tend to prepare too much but then wind up performing the same 5-6 routine repeatedly, so having 5-6 would probably work. I carry a bit more just to make myself feel comfortable that I have a few other things up my sleeve. |

Hi All,
Thanks for all the absolutely terrific advice. Well I did the aforementioned first ever wedding on Saturday, two hours of walk round, and to be honest it was one of the best experiences of my life, I'm still buzzing today, two days later. It went very well and it looks like I've got another three bookings out of it. The reaction were really positive from the guests and the posters above were right, it was a very easy audience of people standing round waiting to be entertained. My final sets were Set 1 Extreme Burn Sponge Balls Four Aces - cards turn red to black in the volunteer's hand Set 2 Coin from pocket to hand routine Crazy Man's Handcuffs Biddle trick leading to an eight phase ambitious card (Thanks to Daryl's excellent DVD) Anniversary Waltz for Bride and Groom, nearly wrecked by the bride dropping the cards! So what did I learn? Well mainly that people love sponge balls! They also loved Extreme Burn but I expected that. I also found that I rarely dipped into my second set - had to force my ambitious card routine on the groom (no point spending six months learning it and then not using it. Once again thanks for the advice, it was really useful, I'm going to slightly tweak the routine for the next one (when I get one and find a different coin routine. I've always had a slight dislike for my existing routine because it starts with a coin palmed in one hand while you show three in the other. I'd like to be able to start by showing one hand empty and the other with the three coins, but that might be because I'm a relative novice with coins. Thanks Again |

Glad to hear it went good. Im telling you get an expanded sh*** and learn roths coins across. It's not knuckle busting at its most basic

That's the #1 thing that new magicians learn. You only end up doing the same few tricks all night.

Good job.
Those tricks will entertain people for hours and you are right about the Two Card Monte but I prefer to changes the 2 Red Aces the the 2 Black Queens

It sounds like you have a good number of tricks just be nice and charming and have a good time. One thing to consider is when doing card magic be aware of dead time between tricks. It's easier to put the deck away and grab some rope than it is to spread through the deck, cull a force card, shuffle, etc.
Have an interesting script , be prepared for lots of manly manly blokes to stand beside you with their arms folded until they decide they like you. Also, ( I'm in the U.K. Too so I do you sweat and the U.K. Crowd a bit more ) I always find it good to open with a quick flashy opener, like everyone is advised to do, and then to do invisible deck. I do it in such a way that I can find out who the Alpha male or who the dominant members of the group are. Try this, walk up to the group, and say "somebody name a card" all eyes will go to the alpha male of the group. I ask that question, find out, ask everyone to think of a card and ask them their name and card chosen in then, I then say. "I'll be honest , I do have a prediction for you. And one of you has just named my prediction. So I'm halfway there. Between yourselves now just decide on one of those cards, if you can't remember the cards just decide on a person and we will use their card". And then often, the alpha male will sort of control things, and ask people what their card was, and HE ( sometimes it is a SHE, but normally male) will tell you what the card is. If it was someone else's choice, you continue and do the effect but it basically gets the alpha male of the group on side. Unless the a big bearded 6"2 40 year old bloke yourself it's good to get the blokes on your side. Especially when your gigging at 15 like I was lol. Anyway, that would be my advice to you. Be kind, be gentle, be charming and be funny. Also, don't mention football teams. I'n the uk I've found it best not to mention football teams when performing |

A huge point in my opinion, is to leave them wanting more, rather than showing them more than they wanted. Particularly at a wedding, I believe that you are there to enhance their special day, not to overshadow it. I've probably misunderstood you comment, but thought I would ask. As an aside, I find a good opener to groups at a wedding, is to have an engaging or interesting line or question that will engage the group - get them talking and involved before you've even started. Good luck Charlie |

I have found that a major problem with many magicians is exactly that they think along the lines of "no point spending 6 months learning it and then not doing it."
Magicians in general can't wait to show their stuff. So many can't wait to run through their scales with the cards in an effort to make something "special". Not realising that people are not as in love with magic tricks as they are. Backing of a bit would leave a more magical feeling usually.

It's sad people don't love magic as much as me. But it's wrong to force it upon them

I normally find 4 magic tricks and that's it even the most amazing thing in the world after that is too much. A good encore effect that is a little bit difference comes in handy then , something like Double Cross, gimmicked torn and restored, or really any kind of gimmicked effect with a reset. Something special you save for that table that ask for something else after your normal 3 trick set

I've performed at 2 weddings, a hotel opening night and a large corporate event in the last week and pretty much all I did on those gigs were, in this order:
1-Sponge Bunnies (opener as it's fun, shows I don't take myself too seriously, gets people involved and always gets screams) 2-Chicago Surprise (sometimes using a same coloured back with a big X on it, where I can joke how the cards have a very subtle mark on them) 3-Trick Shot Production (8 ball production from card case ala john Bannon, great trick for guys) 4-Ambitious Card to Wallet to Omni Deck (using a blank faced card to keep my deck full) 5-Crazy Mans Handcuffs > Broken and restored band (the bands are wrapped around the cardtoon box rather than my wrist) 6-Cardtoon (getting the whole group to create the final card by having someone name the colour, another the suit etc etc) Whilst that's 6 tricks, it lasts around 5-7 minutes and the tricks are different and quick enough not to drag on. Plus most of them involve using the spectators. If I'm in a hurry I'll just do bunnies > chicago > ambitious to wallet. I had a few backup effects (5 to 10 transpo, shell coins across, sharpie revelation, color monte, my drink trick, lottery bill switch) and also did Anniversary Waltz (matthew j dowden handling, the gaffs of which I keep tucked away in my real mans wallet) for the bride and groom |

I like the idea and pun with Chicago surprise. This is actually one of my favorite tricks. If you don't mind I'll "barrow" tjat as us teachers say

Weddings are the best places for magic. I have never had trouble with people not liking magic at a wedding. People are in a great mood and very receptive.

I was booked for a wedding gig the first thing they said was "No card tricks." And I didn't have much else to do strolling.

By the time you've done it the second time, they've "got it". I seldom go more than two phases after that, with increasing openness and provers. Darryl was performing for magicians, for whom there is no upper limit. |
