I am just about done reading "Dick Oslund The Road Scholar – Everything I Own Has a Handle or Wheels." (The Life of Dick Oslund. Four Books In One!) and just felt I should share my feelings in a post.
First let me say that I am almost 35 years old, and until recently I had only dabbled in magic here or there growing up. I became disabled a few years ago and just got into magic to the point that it now consumes my life (in a wonderful way, of course). Just a few months into my daily obsession with learning magic, I was lucky enough to find the Café and make a couple of VERY good friends. One of them being Dick Oslund. He has since become my mentor. I may not know any other magicians in person, but I am learning SO MUCH about what is important in magic, and how to find my way without having to do it all alone and in the dark, so to speak. Back to the book. If you don't know who Dick is, just read some of his great posts on the Café, or do a Google search and check out the cool stuff that you will find. This book tells the story of his passion for magic, how he discovered it, and how he spent seven decades making people happy with his talents. This post isn't my review of the book, per se. I don't think I could give an unbiased review for a book written by a friend and mentor who I love and respect. But I strongly believe that ANYONE who loves magic, and wants to hear about the way things were when "magic was magic" (as I like to say), get this book. I envy the journey Mr.Oslund has had, who he has been blessed to meet and work with along the way, not to mention the people he was able to call his friends. (People a lot of us would give an arm just to meet!) Of course, there are also amazing routines, tricks, and some lessons that ONLY come from being a pro for seven decades. I can't stress it enough folks. If you read, and have a passion for magic, get this book. I am not gaining ANYTHING by promoting this book. I just really believe in Dick's story. It has changed the way I see magic for the better, and I know it can do the same for you. |
