The 80's Called ... They Want Their Magic Book Back - Volume One by Jonathan Friedman
$24.95 Like a lot of us, Jonathan Friedman cut his card magic teeth devouring the early books of Paul Harris. His new book is not only reminiscent of the early Harris works, he outdoes them on several levels. Jonathan assumes you know nothing when you start the book. If there is a slight or move needed, it is not only described in full detail (including the Elmsley count) but the origin of the move or gimmick is given along with the creator and when and where it first appeared. This seems to be the most heavily credit magic book I can remember and it sent me scrambling to my shelves to look up some of the references. As Stephen Minch is mentioned, I am assuming that he probably gave a little help in this area. If a gimmick is needed, Jonathan gives detailed instructions in making it. Lastly, Harris’ books were superb and set a new trend for magic books but the illustrations left something to be desired. Jonathan’s book is lavishly illustrated with numerous photographs. The routines here are a lot of fun just to sit and read. The style will probably appeal more to the extroverted younger performers but a little thinking can turn most of these routines into something you can do regardless of style. Jonathan must be a very likable fellow. Five of his friends donated effects for the book and without exception, these are terrific tricks. These five effects along are well worth the price of the whole book. But wait….there’s more! The tricks by Jonathan are great, too. Here some of the stand outs for me. Outside the Inside- The word “outside” is written on the outside of a cellophane wrapped pack of cards. The word is rubbed with a napkin. Instead of erasing, it magically changes to the word ”inside” written on the inside of the cellophane, directly on the back of the actual card case itself. Selectigami- Very clever use of an old idea direct from the creators of Alfred E. Neuman. Spoon Melt- Very clever use of an ordinary every day item. Wish I had thought of this one myself. The Kernel – Make a kernel of corn pop right in your hand! Guitar Pick a Card – As a guitarist myself, any item that can cover both of my loves will catch my attention. This is going right into the repertoire. Positives – loaded with strong usable material at a very reasonable price. Well written, fun to read and fun to do. A true bargain that may (like Harris’ early works) set a new standard for those who will be writing the books in the future. Negatives- Not one that I could find. I once read a book review that said the main problem with the book is that is covers were too far apart. My only complaint would be that the covers are not far enough apart. But I am not worried. After all, this is only Vol. 1. |
