Hi,
I'd like to share with you ... the oddly named 4 0 4 What is it? 404 - Is a physical book of Drawing Duplications, Openers, Closers, Q&A and other oddities. The book starts with a strange story, a neuroscience-biology lesson and an unconventional cunning opener; the cunning in which lies in our bodies response to this opener as we explore the how and why of "exploiting" our natural biology. An underlining theme in this book is about setting ourselves apart from other performers, disguising our methods and breaking down preconceived beliefs - and that is exactly what this opener, which requires strong audience management, does. Disconnecting Doodles - My Closer This is the explosive double drawing duplication and energetic surprise kicker end to my stage show. Designed for cabaret, dinners, stage and for situations where you are performing for around 30 - 200 people. This has multiple revelations and a logical disconnecting kicker to mindblow them all. In my opinion, you won't have seen anything like this which whilst simple to perform and execute has such a devastating result. This is the reason the book is limited (Literally this is insane and is designed to literally blow the pants off everyone in the audience and for those who care its also a magician fooler.) My Doodle Act - Doodles, drawing duplications and have been a core of my performances for a long time. The doodle act is perfect for parlour performances with around 10 - 20 people. Simple to perform and execute it has multiple effects, readings, climaxes and a little bit of showboating. And we discuss which parts of the act work well on stage and with large audiences. To add to it I've included the outline and structure of a full 40 minute parlour act. The Powerhouse Act 2: QA is my number 1 favourite stage performance piece. Confidence and a desire to truly act and showboat are essential prerequisites to its performance. A celebration of Dynamite Mentalism and the brilliance of Hoy, Finley among others. It works great as a stand alone piece or on stage as closer or just before your closer. It's a tad ballsy but is also very safe, low props and has zero complicated method. The underlining theme of this piece is revealing 5-6 participants hopes, dreams, goals, wishes and ambitions and concludes using one special participant for a lovely symbolic and metaphorical moment of CMR (made very easy and with fail-safes should you not be exactly spot on). S.O.L jumps in now...Again kind of the working idea and what I want to get across in 404 is how tweaks and our own personal fingerprints and style can disguise the effects we are doing and make us stand-out to our audience. S.O.L is my rethink and presentation for the tired out ESP cards that are seen being used by everyone, everywhere. AC-BT v1 & AC-BT v2: Two great billet tears ideal for instant access or a delayed read. There are no fiddly moves and the peek pops into view and disappears just as quick. Perceptional bender Demonstrate the ability to uncannily alter someone's perception of the world. A single coin begins to glow, heat up and get heavier in their hand, before wilting and melting in front of their very eyes, yet is handed back to them without ever leaving their vision in pristine condition. BW-TV A full length act exploring the power and effects of positive and negative energies. This a lot of a play here. Telepathy, CMR, Sensing and feeling energies. This is a great parlour mentalism piece and wonder equally well for an esoteric or mind over body workshop. We then segue into my two person pendulum routine LIGHT AND DARK; I carry this pretty much everywhere and it's one of the first and most insane things I show people. It requires a pendulum and black and white stone - yet sets you up for miracles later on. THE THING- An easy organic looking device that can be made for very little whose purpose is to switch 1-5 billets. Now we enter into the realms of the workshop pieces: TELEPATHY AND ANCHORS (A Workshop piece) A great workshop and lecture is about fun interaction and education. This demonstration is all that ... after a brief explanation of the most effective way to send and receive thoughts, a participant 3 times in a row is able to successfully (not 100% surefire) determine whether the rest of the group at large are sending good thoughts or bad thoughts. Then everyone in the audience tries as well and they are surprisingly successfully. This and isn't what you might think it is ... there is a ton of work going on here and this takes a very different approach than many similar ideas. It's a great lesson in NLP and anchoring as well. Bottom Line: This is a beautiful piece that people really enjoy and are engaged and delighted going through. Enter the Spirit Guides The audience feels the presence of their spirit guide, power animal. The Game Is a history lesson and an exploration of the which hand game's origins and it's the basis of an amazing presentation and handling of the which hand game that keeps you on the participants mind as they'll continue playing this game long after you've gone. Besides a cheeky bump; just a note to say that next week I'll be "filming" a quick video to clarify the handling of the The Thing which purchasers will find on the companion site... unless I break my face snowboarding this weekend.

A nice quote from some private feedback re 404
"Thank you for writing 404. It is enjoyable to read and reflects your clever thinking and creativity through presentations to a wide variety of audiences. As someone who has made a career of psychology, I appreciate your use of psychology in your shows and it’s reflection in this material." From John Mc. I'll be releasing sometime soon a small number of handcrafted leather (deer and kangeroo hide) p**k wallets. Simple, but using a unique internal peek that I haven't seen used before. All purchasers of 404 will go into a raffle to receive one as a gift.

I am ashamed to say that I'm posting because I've been so out of touch with Andy (because kids, because life) and I was feeling nostalgic about how Andy and I used to share effects and ideas all the time.
But then I remembered him sending me something a couple of months ago for my thoughts and I just hadn't had to time to read it. And so I did. Back in February when his last post reminded me. He sent me Disconnected Doodles... so this isn't a hype for the whole book just for that one effect. And here comes the hype. Method-wise any well-read mentalist will already be up to speed. But this is a great and solid closing effect for any mentalism act. It is a natural extension of Andy's own obsession with the Doodle as a way into an audience member's psyche but it can be tweaked to suit most performers' personae. And it doesn't have to be doodles, it could be food, fashion, even questions! But what was made this effect really worth reading was one of the many alternative endings that Andy provides which not only gives a solid ending to a show-- but ensures that the energy at the end of the show is totally under the performers control. I was going to say "Pumped" and that's definitely what's presented but it if the perform wants something else-- "mystified" "relaxed" "laughing" that's also possible. It feels like something that could work terrifically for Sales Associates or Natural Healers equally well. Andy likes to play on the real/entertainment edge with a lot of his work. But make no mistake, this guy is a worker. Thanks for sharing Andy and I hope we can chat soon!

Dave feeling nostalgic too, we'll have to try and pause this life thing and chat and catch-up!
I can definitely see you adapting Disconnecting Doodles to your own personal theme - it'd be interesting to see what you'd do with it; but definitely the beauty of this is it's a closer allowing you to, at the very end, quickly change energy levels, pump up the energy, create anticipation, jazz with the audience, mystify and entertain and go out with some razzle dazzle ... and depending how you use it can also form the framework of your act that precedes the closer. For a 2 part show (45 minutes break 45 minutes) this works great as the framework for the second part of the show and the dirty work is out of the way at the start of the second part, so by the time the closer is coming around I'm not doing anything dodgy. In a 45 minute performance I simply use this as a framework from the beginning of the performance.

Hey!
It's been about a year since 404 came out and while the book hasn't sold out ... after I've sold the last few copies I have in the house, I'll no longer be offering signed copies of 404; it'll still be limited but the copies will be shipped straight to you ... the people ... from the publisher as I can no longer guarantee a smooth swift arrival due to an increasingly hectic, yet fantastic and fun, schedule. Thanks!

There are two signed copies left and then I'll be shipping them out direct with no signing. You can also check out some of the free downloads (I'll be adding to the free download section again soon) at the site, or Mtangulizi which is predominately more close up while 404 is stage and parlour - real mentalism, audience management and proficiency required.

I purchased the book a few weeks ago, and I'm pleased with its content. First I want to say that Andy was very nice. Not only he sent me a gift along with the book, but he recorded a 11-minute video to answer some of my questions regarding the routines.
Thanks Andy for being so nice ! I've rarely seen that. Before going any further, I have to tell you I'm more a magician than a mentalist, and I don't have excellent knowledge in mentalism stuff. I don't even know most of the references cited in the book (some from Jermay, some from Peter Turner, or Joshua Quinn, etc). Disconnecting Doodles You ask the spectators from the audience to make a small drawing, fold the paper in quarters, and with an assistant (randomly selected from the audience), go to collect these papers in a bowl. The assistant gathers these papers, chooses 3 other persons from the audience at random, they redraw the drawing they receive, you duplicate 2 drawings. For the remaining spectator, he will assist you in finding the original owner of the drawing, among the audience. There are some secret moves you have to do, but it's nothing you won't be familiar with. Two methods require some gimmicks, but Andy explains how to make them, and one which doesn't but still need a setup. The drawing duplication of the two spectators has nothing special in itself. But what got my attention and impressed me is the way you find out the owner of the last drawing, among the audience. Wonderful. The only weak point of the routine is the collection of the drawings, which is a dead moment, the annoying part of the routine. Signs of Life It's a different way to present ESP type effects. The symbols are different, as well as the story. I really like it. The Powerhouse Q&A Act II A Kurotsuke routine where 5-6 spectators on stage take out a (wish) cylinder from a bag and hide it in their hand, without looking. One of the cylinders is black, the others are white. Those with the white cylinder think about their dreams, and you'll have to read those dreams, relying on Q&A. For a more extensive reading, you can ask spectators to write their dream in a piece of paper, and put it inside the cylinder. You get your peek. After this phase, you'll find who has the black cylinder. Those familiar with Q&A should know how to select the spectators and how to do the readings. Gimmicked version of this Kurotsuke routine relies on very, very expensive props. The ungimmicked version requires a certain type of bag, and a bit of preparation. You eliminate one by one the spectators who have the white cylinder. You're left with the last spectator, he who has the black cylinder. You will do a which hand routine, and afterwards invite the spectator to guess in which hand you're holding the object. Finally, this spectator gives the black cylinder to a spectator in the audience, with your back turned. And your task is to find out who got the cylinder in the audience. The Doodle Act It's a reading act using billets. Those need to be prepared, but you can prepare the stack so that you can read up to 14+ persons. I really like the peek that you get when you withdraw a random billet, it's really undetectable, and with minimum misdirection, it is perceived as if there is no move at all. AC-BT v1 & AC-BT v2 I know about 6-7 center tears. My prefered one is T-Rex by Ran Pink. And the second is AC-BT. It's really good. And clean. There are many, many pictures, it's very easy to follow every steps. Perceptional bender It's the only routine that I dislike. I'm not convinced at all. I will just say it's a lot about acting. BW-TV You show the spectators 10 positive and 10 negative images. They pick one from each category, they discard one of those, leaving the other sandwiched between their hand. You will know which category of pictures a spectator has discarded. Regarding the positive/negative images that spectators select, these are the negative and positive pictures as they perceive, not according to your standard or perspective. Next phase, you hand them a bag, they pick one without looking. Some will get a white stone, some a black stone. They also get a pendulum. Those with a white stone will see the pendulum swing, and those with black stone will see the pendulum remaining motionless. For one spectator, you can try a more special routine, where he is given a white stone, and after being asked to reject his negative thoughts, he noticed his white stone has changed into a black stone. I didn't understand first how the pendulum will move by itself, but Andy explained everything to me, and well, it's not convoluted at all. I haven't tried but he told me it actually works. Vak Telepathy This is the most fascinating part of the book. The core concept is anchor (I've never heard about it before but apparently it's a known concept in mentalism). The spectator on stage gets negative feelings when you ask the entire audience to mentally project negative thoughts, and the spectator feels more positive thoughts coming to her when you ask the entire audience to send her positive thoughts. The key is to use psychology at your advantage, and it's the routine I'm the most interested to perform. I don't think it's reliable 100% of the time, but it's worth the try. Clearly. Journey for the Power Animal This is a story and presentation which would play very well for a telepathy routine. Those who like the Bizarre will enjoy it, I'm sure. The xxxx Game It's a different take on the which hand routine. But in this case, a group of people participates. One group is composed of the "detectives" (their goal is to guess in which hand the object is hidden) and the other group is composed of the "hiders" who are allowed to play and sing so as to disturb the seers. These and other rules make the game quite attractive in my opinion. I won't reveal what the xxxx is, as it would reveal the source. Conclusion To summarize, if you're new to mentalism, I don't think it's the best book to start with, because you'll probably have to buy some more books/videos, i.e., those cited in the book. And if you don't do stage acts, some routines are just not for you (e.g., Disconnecting Doodles). In general, you need large audience to perform most, if not all, of the routines. Think about +10 persons. Given my current knowledge, I don't know if you'll learn new techniques here. But not only these are very good, I think the other interesting feature of this book is learning how to connect with people. Andy proposes some ideas of conversation, which generally relates to the mystic and spirituality (e.g., journey of the mind, summoning of the spirits, memories and wishes like sands in the air, etc...). People who like unusual stories will like it, and especially the last two chapters. I haven't read many books or ebooks or videos on mentalism (but I'm not new to mentalism of course). Yet, so far, what I've read has always been about learning/applying techinques or how to better convince your spectators about your effects. This book talks about ways to connect with people, not just techniques. That's different from what I usually read. The only two negative points I've found : 1) some passages were not easy to understand but Andy was very responsive and in any case, it could be me 2) there are typos. |

The pendulum will work ... probably you will be the most amazed ... at the back of the bonus pdf you'll find an easy guide to pendulums which may help as well. IAIN: What's your doodle thing? Thanks Iain Moran: Fixed. You should have received your copy by now too.
