Last week I did 2 shows for Philip & Henry. This was a show for high school aged kids, which is actually one of my favorite groups to do shows for. I started the show with my Temple of Benares illusion. I like to do it different then most magicians. I have an assistant inside of the illusion before doing it, and she magically appears at the end. It went over greatly.
Next, I did Cue the Magic, using an audience member. Another round of applause. Next I did Smash and Stab. Only 1 audience member knew where the spike was because of a screen that is up. I then proceed to smash the styrofoam cups, with gasps from the audience. I added something to this so that when I smash the last cup, it looks like I drove the spike through my hand. This is a real shocker that startles everyone including the audience member that hid the spike in the beginning. After a few seconds of shock, I then show that I was not injured, and that the spike was under the last cup on my table. I then did my Lester Lake Guillotine, that I modified so that it stands up. I did this so that my volunteer stands up instead of kneeling down. I do this illusion in both a funny and serious way. Example: The good news is this is an illusion that is 90% safe. The bad news is that I have already done this 8 times with no problem. Another big round of applause after the illusion. This ended the first show.
I gave the Philip & Henry guy the e-mail address of the guy that handled the sound and lighting at the show so that he could give him his opinion of the show. This is a guy that I do not know.
The guy that actually hired me through Philip & Henry comes up to me after the show and said; Great Show, when I was back stage.
The next show was exactly the same except that I was able to do a visible sawing through body routine, and a Losander Floating Table routine. A great round of applause ended that show as well. After the show, any kids I came in contact with, told me how much they enjoyed the show. I left the show feeling great.
The next day, I get a call from Philip & Henry, saying that the client left a message saying that he was very dissatisfied. The Philip & Henry guy asked me what happened at the show. He wanted my take on the show before calling the client. Needless to say, I was shocked! I asked him to call me back after talking to the client. I told him how the client came up to me at the end of the first show saying, great show. I did not go to him. I told him how the audience responded after each routine with a big round of applause and cheers.
Later, I get the call from Philip & Henry, and he told me the client said that the only reason the audience responded as they did was because they are the top 1,000 students in the state and they did this out of respect. He said my show was amateurish, suitable for only 5 year olds. My floating table routine was too long.
I gave the Philip & Henry guy an e-mail address of the guy that handled the lighting and sound at the show for his opinion of the show. I do not know this guy.
I did not hear back from Philip & Henry.

That's crazy. Sounds like everyone enjoyed your show. I wonder why in the world the guy changed his tune on your show.
Best of luck to you, Bob.
