Thanks for letting me join. I've performed magic and mentalism occasionally professionally, and deliver memory training to companies in the UK but my day job is a pro musician. I was a stand up comic for three years a decade ago, I still write scripts and compose and record music. I'm here because I'm going to finally put my mentalism act out there this year. Having lurked around the forums for some time, I thought I'd dip in a toe or two. Looking forward to making some friends in magic. My grandfather was in World War 2 with Ned Williams (Robert Harbin), so the love of the art goes back at least two generations!

Welcome Ian Ess,
You sure have some skills that will help in Magic (not the least of which is the musician's willingness to practice). Your connection to Robert Harbin is interesting. I'm more familiar with Harbin's Stage Magic. Did you Grandfather mention seeing any Card Magic or other Close-Up performed by Harbin? Did Harbin do any larger performances that your Grandfather saw? -Mary Mowder |

Hi Mary, thanks for the kind words. Harbin taught Out Of This World to my grandfather, who showed it to me every visit, promising he would teach me if I could work out the principle on my own. I managed it when I was 11 or 12 and he was true to his word. I'll have to ask my dad if he remembers any more 🙂

They must have been good friends if they shared Magic.
"Out of this World" is a terrific after hours trick (one best done in quieter more personal venues). It really connects with the volunteer (and good for you for working it out). -Mary Mowder |
