Hello,

My magic society is having a Tenyo night in a few weeks.

I don't have any Tenyo magic at all.

I am pretty new to magic and have been starting with cards and a bit of mentalism - but I'm really interested in learning a bit about Tenyo.

Do you have any recommendations for something I could watch out for? Is ebay a good place to start? (I'd like something cool, and a bit different but
I don't want to spend a fortune)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Smile

Whoa, BIG question, with a ton of answers & info.
But, you have come to the right place.
I would start right here!! And start reading through the posts.
That will send you off on all sorts of tangents, and links.
Then go to YouTube and just google Tenyo.
Good luck.

Buy Lubor Fiedler's trick "Invisible Zone." It is a perfect Tenyo trick, easy to do, and not expensive. You'll find it on eBay.

Thank you both!

Edshern - yes, as I wrote it I equated it to going to the pasteboards with a "name me a card trick!" sized question. Sorry for the huge question but thank you for your help! Smile

Richard - I'll check out Invisible Zone, sounds fun - thank you!

I think Crystal Cleaver is an excellent trick and summarizes Tenyo very well. Also not too expensive and a personal favorite.

Thanks - those two look very interesting. Smile

Someone already took in magic sneakers and a burger building trick - so something different to those would be fun. Smile

You could always buy Richard's book, read it and then be the master Tenyo know-it-all of the club! Smile

Be careful Sarah most of us obsessive Tenyo "nuts" started with "I am just going to pick up a couple of the tricks" Smile... you've been warned...

If you search can find a thread or two on favorite and "top 10" effects... good place to start. Good Luck!

I'll tell you one that I think is really under rated and is a little less toy-like or Prop heavy then most Tenyo (I mention this since the two you mentioned are both flat card like tricks which are a little a-typical for what most people think of as Tenyo).
Anyway, Bird Watcher is a great trick that is easy to learn and adjust to your own style and though it requires the cards it comes with feels less prop heavy... cool trick.

Not quite; I haven't bought anything yet. This could be a last minute escape Smile

I can't see Bird Watcher on ebay. Is it tricky to find?

There are a few blogs and Tenyo fan sites that list tricks, pictures, effect descriptions, and even videos. May be a good place to start to see what may appeal to you:

http://tenyo-magic.blogspot.com
http://funstuffonly.com/tenyo
http://www.tenyo.co.jp/magic_en/index.html

or YouTube has a ton of fan-performed Tenyo, may give you some inspiration and ideas:

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
