Here is basically what I perform when I do shows. This is in my rotation (some are left out on occasion). I mix strolling with a bit of parlor magic just to jazz it up. Let me know what you think. Please let me know if you think there is anything I could add for variety or if it's good as is. So far, my reactions have been top notch. Please be polite and kind to me, there was a time on here I was treated so rudely by members I actually contemplated quitting magic. Just letting everyone know. Much love.

Hello and I'm glad you didn't quit. One time slacked on my practice and it sent me back pretty bad in my skills. Also it's such a wonderful art and you will get many uses out of it. Because you can do ambitious I'm gonna assume you can do a double l, if not that's okay. Check out Pop Haydens Chicago Surprise. It's a killer. Also maybe some coins. I love my coins across but if you aren't familiar with coins you can go for something easier. I prefer Roths. Good luck to you brother and never hesitate to contact me.

Hey!
Glad you're still here! Now do you do ALL of these during a gig? How's your pocket management with that? When you're doing shows, what type of shows are you doing? |

I would say that you have plenty of variety..
Also, what sort of crowd do you perform for and what are the working conditions? If you definitely want to add something, how about some coin magic and another impossible location option? Charlie |

I second the vote on adding coins. You may want to also consider some finger ring magic. A ring takes no pocket space. I'd recommend Gregory Wilson's Ring Leader, and/or Garrett Thomas's Ring Thing.

Thanks guys! You guys rock.
First off, my double lift is world class. It's by far my most perfected move I do basically all of this during a gig, or 98% of it. My pocket management is decent. I'll keep a good 75% of the strolling material in coat and pants pockets, while I'll keep the larger stuff in a bag when I switch over to parlor magic. I'll also swap my strolling material from time to time to keep my act fresh for my audience. I'll just stop at the bag I bring with me and swap out let's say Extreme Burn for some sponge balls or something of the sort. I mainly do professional shows for older clientele. Teenagers all the way to seniors. Ideally holiday parties, weddings, cocktail hours. I'm going to check out those ring and coin acts. Much love to you all, and thank you again! |

Again it's no problem at all. There are some people here on the Café that aren't helpful at all but don't pay them any mind. If you ever need anything just let me know

One thing that never worked for me personally was the constant changing of props for close up. For my style, and only mine mind you it seems odd to always have to pull out something different to do different effects.
I prefer many tricks with cards and coins and so forth. Seems more natural for me. Just adding food for thought. I am by no means saying not to do other things. Not in the least. Just mentioning how things work for me is all.

I read your post when you first posted it and I've been mulling your request over. I would offer the following tricks for your consideration;
Gypsy Floss by Tom Jones, also known as Waxed by Lonnie Chevrie. This is a great torn and restored thread routine that I personally use a lot. A ring and string routine that I am personally fond of Ring Escape by Fantasma magic. This is a gimmicked version of ring and string that is easy to do and looks really good. I also use this frequently and it gets great reactions. I don't see a cup and balls type routine in your set so I would suggest either Jiggernaut by Mark Jennest or the routine I'm currently working on Just a Cup by Axel Hecklau. When I was working restaurants, Jiggernaut was the closer in one of my working sets and is a great little cup and balls type routine that was always in my left jacket pocket. The best chop cup routine I've found is Just a Cup. The gimmick is brilliant and the routine is excellent. Incidentally, if you buy Jennest's Miracles While You Wait, you will also get Short Hop and Chaptrick on the same DVD. Short hop is an examinable hopping half routine that is done with a far cheaper gimmick than the traditional hopping half gimmick. It is a solid routine that can stand on it's own or precede any Scotch and Soda routine. This is a nice way to have the coins examined first, then ring in the gimmicked set and really fry brains. Chaptrick is a great little trick and I've found it is a nice way to follow up Red Hot Mama as it gives you something to do with the odd red card (at least for me as I typically perform with a blue deck). If you don't do Red Hot Mama, that would be the one card effect I would suggest adding, as it is a classic and the spectators love it. I see you have enough card tricks, but consider that one none the less. I would also recommend a torn and restored trick like Torched and Restored by Brent Braun or my current favorite, Torn and Restored Post-it Note by Richard Osterlind. I performed Torched while table hopping and it always went over well. If I was doing walk around today, I would likely use the Torn and Restored Post-it Note. For well lit locations, black post-its with a silver gel pen look really cool. For low lighting environments, the traditional yellow post-it with a black pen would work great. Post-its (and a pen) take up little room, require no advanced prep (unlike torched) and are cheaper than cards. Also, Osterlind's Torn and Restored Newspaper is on that DVD as well. It is a likely the best examinable torn and restored newspaper available and is worth the price of the DVD all by itself. Lastly, since you perform Stigmata, you might consider similar type trick (sort of) done on the spectator called Double Cross. This gets excellent reactions and there is some good advice about performing it from Jared on the Double Cross thread, page 8. If you really want to perform it, I suggest PM'ing Jared for his tips on it as they are worth the few seconds it would take to PM him. It's a shame about the crediting/theft issue, but that aside, it is a worker. I hope this gives you some food for thought.

It looks like you have a good selection.
If you want to add coins, I suggest Scotch & Soda, Hopping Hakves. Good Luck,
Pirouz

A few nice coin effects seem logical given that you already do sponge balls (many sleights are similar), and you can 'jam' with coins the same way as you may do with your ambitious card routine. My favourite coin routine at the moment is Imagination Coins by Garrett Thomas, it's available on its own or is included with less in-depth instruction on a WGM DVD, and quite easy to do.
Insidious is a new effect from Michael Scanzello which is basically a Copper, Silver, Brass routine with a silver coin, a blackened coin, a brass key and a match box. It's really, really nice, and well thought out. As above, ring and string routines are excellent for both close-up and impromptu performances. If you do a CTW you can do a ring to wallet in a sealed envelope, and you're always ready to go with a shoe lace if asked to 'do something'. You're also getting a lot of bang for your buck with regards to pocket space. I prefer Mark Leveridge's stuff on this over Greg Wilson's stuff, and Nick Einhorn includes some moves with his Pro-Flite ring on key chain effect which are also useful, but it's all good. |

Hi magikmax,
Thanks for the kind words about Insidious! Pillowman, all the effects listed look good. For me it comes down to what I can do best and have down really well so I can focus on interacting with the audience. The more you get a conversation going with them and have fun the bigger the reactions get and anything you do well that is good material will shine! For example, the classic sugar disappearance and reappear with a TT is killer! Might be good to add to your set. It adds variety, you find sugar packets at banquet halls and restaurants, and from the layman's view how could you palm loose sugar?
