I started magic as a hobby in the 1970s. But then I had a family, and ceased the hobby till the present. I am now relearning the old tricks and trying out new ones. I still have some original magic books from that time such as "Modern Coin Magic".
I recently purchased some DVDs and find they make learning much easier than a book. However, I find that learning from a DVD works best if you go beyond the instructions, and carefully watch the performance for the many subtle refinements. Then there is practice... |

Welcome Arabus,
And welcome back to Magic (a patient old friend who is always glad to see you). Are you mostly into Close-Up? I learn better from DVDs but there are some drawbacks. It is easy to subtly mimic (or not so subtly) the performers and harder to find you own way. You are right about being able to see many little details that could never be translated into print though. -Mary Mowder |

Yes, I am close-up and mostly card tricks. I am practicing with coins, but not at performance level yet. I am developing my own "patter" or "style" as well. While I enjoy "knuckle busters", I think a routine works best if you also include self-workers, G**Fs and Gi****ks.
Back in the 70s, I would often go to some of the NY City magic stores. In that era, Times Square consisted of peep shows, street vendors selling fake Rolex, electronics stores, magic stores, and certain other types of entertainment. After a few visits, I asked about lessons, and Slydini was recommended. My wife and I had never heard of him. The lesson cost $25.00. I asked if my wife could come and he said sure, no extra charge. So we went to his apartment in the city.... That's all I remember... J/K |

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I realized the J/K might have been taken wrong. We did visit Slydini and it was a memorable night.

I'm glad to hear that.
I did not know what J/K meant. -Mary Mowder |
