What are some resources (books/DVD) to use as a guide for creating a silent act (not a mime act, per se) for busking?
My thought is that this will help cross language barriers. Looking forward to your suggestions. P.S. Please do not talk about music during the act. That's not what I want this discussion to turn into. Thanks! |

The Four of a Kind DVD that you can get from Denny and Lee's features a silent act performer, but he is also a mime. Still, it might be worth watching to see an example of one in action.

Thanks Robert.
Are you aware of any books that will teach a breakdown of how to go about developing a silent act? Thanks in advance |

Why constrain yourself to somebody else's thoughts in a book. Develop your own. Write, practice, try it out, refine it, try it again...you have a vision. Go make it reality.

Robert makes a good observation about the whistles, I've also seen squeakers and horns used. If used well it gives the performer a kind of high pitched adult in a charlie brown cartoon vibe.

All good advice. Here is my 10 cents:
Watching David Shiner is great. But you wont get what hes got any time fast. Study clown. Take a course. There are several clown classes happening around the world. Avner has one. He also teaches a specific techniques from a guy named Lecoq. You will need a solid foundation. And although magic books are good to read (you should) they will not teach you how to build YOUR own character and develop it. Honestly, even a cooking class would help. Any other kind of discipline will and can be added to a character. So the more you know, the more you can apply to your character goals and back story. It's all about action and reaction to your audiences. -Fynn |

I do gypsy thread on the street silently. It seems to work out well. At the end I get two people to hold the ends of the thread and they walk backwards to reveal it. It gets a nice applause (sometimes).

I just want to say that a silent act has to really be thought out. You need to work on showing intent through you actions. Much can be said through body language. If possible try and talk to a local drama coach from a college or high school.

There are a number of Busker's that do an entirely silent show. Some don't use the standard set-up of a table or cups and balls. Istvan
Here is the ending bit of Istvan's show. He even hats silently. Check out the size of his audience. https://youtu.be/ZVbzXNsNkZ4 Here is yet another magician in Barcalona doing a silent act. https://youtu.be/2X_snfSj6wU Or Fergus: https://youtu.be/e2yEa_iztaY More Istvan's act (his act is entirely silent): https://youtu.be/_V6Vn5zu4OI https://youtu.be/DPzV_SVmeew
