You can see how the R.O.P.S. move is used in proper context in this routine, filmed at the Magic Castle.

First edition of Rubinstein Coin Magic sold out in RECORD TIME, and the supplies of the reprint are dwindling fast! The good news, though, is that I have reprinted the book once again (they are selling like hotcakes!), so there will be enough for everyone!! As such, and for the last time, I will have a supply of books that I can sign. All come with a free gift until supplies are gone, so first come, first serve! To pre-order, be sure to send me an email at rubinsteindvm@aol.com. books will be here and ready to ship on October 8!!
RUBINSTEIN COIN MAGIC- The biggest book on coin magic since Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, and the most important since David Roth's Expert Coin Magic! Hardbound, 500 pages, 20 chapters of state of the art coin magic illustrated with 930 crisp photos! A contribution chapter from over 20 of the world's top coin magicians! This will be the book against which all future books on coin magic will be measured! Already called a Modern Classic!!
And if anyone (USA ONLY) needs some of the coin stuff used in the book, shoot me an email at rubinsteindvm@aol.com as I have some limited supplies of coins and props used on the book.

Whoops, I see I posted that example earlier in this thread. Oh well, here's another one (and yes, they are all in the new book).

Mike, let's say you place the coin on the palm of your hand, say your magic word, then open your hand and the coin is still there. You then reach over, with second finger on top and thumb below, to the edge of the coin nearest you, and turn the coin over. Are you then in the right position to do the sleight?

So yes, that would be akin to the R.O.P.S. retention pass, where the coin is actually placed into the hand with the thumb and second finger (you can see that done with the series of vanishes I had posted). But you would be better off opening your hand, just touching the coin to indicate it (as opposed to turning it over), and performing the R.O.P.S. move. That way there would be no apparent way to remove the coin from the hand, since it is already there. That would be the function of the move, to vanish the coin once it is already in the hand, and avoid having to do a transfer. Once you pick up the coin and turn it over, you are performing a false transfer.
