A little late to the subject. I travel a lot, and have never had a problem, just overly curious TSA. That said, I always have a small padded envelope in my carryon and stamps in my wallet ready to mail gaffs home. A little insurance policy. You never know...

I take them in a coin purse either in my pocket or carry-on. Never a problem.

Lots of old threads on TSA stories.
I use to travel overseas a lot and got stopped frequently because of my coins. I learned that coins stacked on top of each other look like a suspicious cylinder through the X-ray machine. Looking at the coin stack from top down. When I positioned the coins slide ways, they always passed through X-ray without being stopped. One TSA agent did confirm the cylinder thing with me.

I always carry a Scotch & Soda with me in a black velvet bag.
When going through airport security, I simply put the bag into the bowl with the rest of my pocket's contents. Never had a problem. My Leatherman tool, on the other hand... ; ) |

Not gaff coins at an airport, but once I did get stopped with my color changing knives, going into a municipal building up in Albany, NY.
I was rushing for a governmental meeting in the building, and I had all my stuff with me as I was catching a train back down to NYC immediately afterwards. When my bag went through the screening, I guess the little knives showed up. Of course, I had to open it up and show them, and I explained that they were just a magic trick, even showed them real quick but they said I couldn't carry them into the bldg. I really had to get to this meeting, I was already a bit late. And the automaton officers there would not hold anything so that I could retrieve it later. I actually had to rid myself of the knives outside to be allowed into the bldg. When I checked for them later, they were gone. It hurts to even remember all that. Hopefully, these "checkings" have gotten smarter or at least more considerate of such situations, because at least in such a case they would have a way that they can hold the item for your later retrieval.

Hey MB,
Unfortunately, I don't think things would be any better these days - if anything, probably worse. Most security folks have no sympathies for stuff like that, and the ones that do usually can't do anything about it. (That's partly why I never carry an knife anymore, and really liked Chad Long's color changing flash drives). Part of the issue is around safety - not yours, but theirs. If they allowed you to store things (of unknown origin), it's (a) a lot of extra headache from them, but more importantly (b) it would mean they're storing a potentially suspect object. Who know's what's inside or where it's been? It's the same reason that all of those public lockers that used to be available at train stations/etc. are no longer usable - it would be too easy to leave something nefarious (probably with a timer/phone) and have it essentially be untraceable. There are similar issues with storing random objects at security checkpoints. They have no incentive to help, so there's no reason for them to change. Perhaps I'm just overly pessimistic about it, and some day it will... |
