I read this on Jim's site 20 minutes after I announced my son was planning on spinning. 20 minutes later Jim had this on his site....
.It has been brought to my attention that the son of a former well known rip-off cup dealer (note I did not say maker as he never actually made any cups himself - but certainly claimed that he did) is planning on selling cups. Well, let us see whose cup designs he will try to rip off. Whatever he plans on selling, he is in for a big surprise! Hint - R-OM! I'm not quite know what he means by his threats, but I'm befuddled on what R-OM means. Does anyone know? Jim is telling in the random post on his site that either Jim or someone will try to stop him from selling. Here we go again. The old windbag is at it again.

If you would like to be put on a list for email notifications, just write Jake Jr. at bbw100@icloud.com There problem solved. I'll be suggesting to Jr. who to add and who not to add.

Okay I may asking a dumb question but would you be willing expand on this a bit?
Do you manufacture cups? I guess I'm curios what would make him believe his design would be "ripped off". I'm not really digging for drama just curios about the history. |

I saw that too. I'm not sure what he means by it. But, frankly what is he going to do about it anyway? I don't think he's even manufacturing that much anymore, and he certainly hasn't made cups in awhile. Tell Jr. good luck with the venture. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who will want to get on that list.
Chuck, it's a long story. Jake used to own RNT2, and was intimately involved in the production of many of the cups on the market today. Because of his work with RNT2, many of the cup designs that were formerly unavailable--like Paul Fox cups--are available again. He really set the standard in quality, which had never been done before. It was really quite innovative. When he sold the company to Donnie Buckley, the legacy of high quality products has continued to this day. When you buy something from RNT2, you are getting the utmost quality. Remember, most of their metal products, like cups, are still made as individual pieces, spinning them by hand. It takes tremendous skill to spin metal with such consistency, so that the individual pieces can be put together as sets, which match almost perfectly. Very different method than Johnson Products, who uses a CNC machine to make their cups. I don't think Jake will err his past grievances with Mr. Riser on this forum...then again it might be entertaining! |

Thank you for the explanation. I really was not looking for dirt just a bit of history. It sounds like because RNT could be seen as stealing the designs of cups from the past he assumes his design might be added to this list? Maybe that's close?
I know it's really not my business I'm just interested in this as a bit of magical history. Sorry I don't mean to imply that anything was stolen just how it might be mistaken for that. |

It's a shame that Jim has this attitude. He makes good cups. At one point, I owned 3 different sets of his, but have dwindled down to the 1 that I use. I also am the proud owner of some RNT2 Jake AND Donnie era cups. Love'em.

What strikes me as questionable ethics, is Jake sold the R&T2 to Donnie Buckley, and now is starting up another duplicate business. That does not feel right to me.
Although the community is in need of perfect linking Rings like the original Rings and Things company produced. Or a company that would create the Morrissey line would be welcome as well. James P. Riser has announced he is cutting back production to officially retire from his home business. So sorry to lose such a knowledgeable craftsman in the magic community. He is making special items for the real professional magicians that are constantly working. |

Cutting back? From what? His massive production of 10 sets of cups per year? He never produced his stuff in great numbers.

He's blocked his email server from receiving any of Jake Jr.'s emails or anyone else for that matter, who knows?
Pepka, I took giggles to his cutting back. I own one set of risers, the large set. What I ask is give Jr. a chance, He has a few dozen of his own blueprints. I have no idea what the R-OM stands for, except Random only Memory. Jim also threatened Jr. if he tries to make anything he's in for a big surprise. Well Jr. delivered 3 wood turnings (chop cups) with matching wands. Well the sky didn't fall like chicken little said it would. I can just imagine how horrible Christmas is at his house, bah humbug. Jr. has some great ideas for his company., just give him a chance. If you would like to be on a small mailing list you can be on it by emailing (bbw100@icloud.com. Best, Jake Jr.

First off -- Jake isn't starting the company. His son is.
Second, you don't know what Jake, Jr. is producing or whether it will be a duplicate of what Donnie is selling. So far, all I have heard about is wood turning. Third, if memory serves, Jake sold the company five years ago. That's the length of a normal non-compete clause in a contract. I think you are taking rumors a priori and expressing your version of them a posteriori. BTW, if you have the original packing from a set of Rings and Things rings, read the instructions and tell me who actually made them. Quote: On Feb 29, 2016, Bill Hegbli wrote:

Intially the owner made the rings. A magic friend took him to D. Robbins, and Robbins ordered 20,000, but the owner of R&T, found out how much work, day in and day out, trying to fill an order like that was. Needless to say, the order was never filled. I personally talked to the owner at many magic conventions, he always mentioned the laborious task it was trying to keep up with the Linking Ring and Zombie orders. I know later he hired Tim Star, and it was mentioned that he had part time workers for those "pay the rent" products.
I went to Owen's magic, met Les Smith, he showed me items that that the hired out, like a tube full of Chink-A-Chink, that were all made wrong by another company. I think that is why they establish their business as a company, they don't want all the work on them, especially production work. Quote:

My reply tp "Sure" the new website will have pictures of all the team involved. My father is not spinning, He has lost the use
of his right hand and arm. My father has Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome look it up in Google, Look it up and see the damage that it does to your body he is 0.01% that has the disease. There is no cure for it, only medication. I'll be making what ever I feel like making and only as I have time. My full time job is working on the water on a crab boat. It certainly pays more than having a metal shop. I make about $2500 a week. I leave for New Bedford on Saturday and could be gone for weeks and even months. I have blueprints, dozens of them from not only me but magicians.as well. They all understand if it is a rush job, I can't do it. Others understand his and they were told and are willing to wait. I don't ask for $ up front as I don't know when they will get and approve the order. Mad Jake Jr. |

With all due respect, Bill, I can tell you that you don't really have your facts straight.
I am in possession of most of Mike Brazill's archives. I also have about 15 hours of taped conversations covering the history of Rings and Things, all done with full knowledge and consent of Mike Brazill. If you don't know who Mike Brazill is, then you don't know anything about the historical details of Rings and Things. I have spoken to Jake AND his son. You haven't. Your judgement is based on things you don't really know. Quote: On Mar 3, 2016, Bill Hegbli wrote:

This was Just mentioned to me by Mentalist /Magician Michael Lee.
I have known and communicated w/Mr. James Riser for some time and I have the highesr respect for the man, his Brilliant Craftsmanship and his Honesty. Michael also said if James is P---ed off ! w/ someone it is more then likely due to that someone ripping off one of his creations, and sadly adding It's a known Fact that the Beautiful Riser street cups have indeed been lifted , the look , measurements, the who shabang ! Which is a dam shame considering The thought , Capitol and effort this man puts into some of magic greatest creations . To those who Love the Art of magic, to have Mr. James Riser just walk away whould be an Unspeakable loss to the Artistic and Magic community. and if this happens we have only ourselves to blame. Lets hope this can be worked out M123 |
