I am looking for books on magic theory and showmanship. I have Magic and Showmanship, the Fitzkee trilogy, and Strong magic on the list. Any others?

With a little research I turned up Five points in magic and The magic way by Juan Tamariz. Does anyone have an opinion on these books?

I highly recommend Joshua Jay's free ebook "Magic in Mind"... Excellent collection of essays from many points of view. I also thought it was a good introduction to various writers - made it easier to find which voices I connect with without spending a ton of money on trial and error.

For theory, I found that a good starting point is the e-book "Magic In Mind" compiled by Joshua Jay. It's available FREE from Vanishing Inc. here:
https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic-......in-mind/ It features essays and excerpts by many of the great thinkers in magic, including several of the ones mentioned in this thread. This is a great way to find out whose perspectives on magic theory resonate the most with your own. That should help you decide which authors/books you want to try to track down. |

Another one to add for Magic Theory:
Leading with Your Head (Psychological and Directional Keys to the Amplification of the Magic Effect) by Gary Kurtz - This is 60 pages of Magic Theory. A Must Read. Here is a link with a comment on this book: http://www.mylovelyassistant.com/products/view/2171 |

Vol. 2 of Card College has an entire section devoted to theory that pulls information from many varied sources. I loved it.

Colton, you'll enjoy both the Tamariz books. The Five Points is a relatively-quick read, but all very profound stuff. You might also like to add Our Magic by Maskelyne and Devant to your list.

Magic of Ascanio Vol.1, without his written material, there would be no Strong magic
one book that rarely mention is Lawrence Hass's Transformation. I highly recommended. |

Magic theory can surely be picked up from good books. But showmanship is a different ball game imho. No matter how many books I read on that, I either have it naturally or need to work my butt off trying to develop. My 2 cents.
There is no better freedom than choice and no better choice than freedom.

Regarding Tmariz, definitely read Five Points and The Magic Way. Sankey's Beyond Secrets is also excellent. I recently picked up Beyond Deception by Tobias Beckwith. It is also an excellent work on magic theory.

Someone already mentioned it, but Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz is a great one. He also has a follow on book called "Designing Miracles". This gets more into designing effects for maximum audience impact, but in doing so, it discusses the perceptions and expectations of audiences, which should play into how one performs overall.
Tada!...
