Hi all
As a newbie to magic, I was wondering about how to do with other peoples tricks. If I see someone performing live or on TV and understands how the trick is performed, can I then use it myself or is this considered stealing? Currently only practicing for myself and entertaining the closest family, but maybe in the future when skill increases showing others. |

There is so much more to "understanding how it is done" than can be guessed or learned from watching a performance -- especially on video that give only a limited perspective of audience engagement,
preparation, subtleties, psychology, etc. An apparently simple effect may have taken years to develop and refine. It is not always a question of identifying which sleight was used, but why that choice was chosen in preference to others. When you read a book on magic that describes and effect, or acquire a DVD to explain it (by the creator), you will receive permission to perform it. You also get the theory and reasoning behind the effect. It is great that you are concerned over the ethics here, and there is another forum that discusses these thinks you can review. Doing magic tricks is easy -- with or without permission. Learning how to perform magic effects is another matter. Welcome to a journey that can take a lifetime. Give yourself permission to learn how to kindle the desire for astonishment and "awe and wonder" in an audience. So many books are now free online.

Hi and thanks for the reply. Im aware that there are many more things to learn in order to perform. In my opinion the "simple" sleight of hand is the easy thing. The presentation and the handling of the crowd is what makes a difference between a beginner and the more experienced. I have invested in some books and have some nice reading in front of me. Tarbell, Mark Wilson and RRTCM is the ones that I have started with after reading the guides here at the Café. Will check the other forum and see what guides there are concerning other peoles performances.
Thanks again for all the help |

I had a certain trick that sat on my shelf because I wasn't satisfied with the routine. (Note: the "trick" is just about how it is done - the "routine" is about how you make it engaging and entertaining for the audience.) I saw a YouTube video of a master magician performing his routine of this trick. I sent an email to the man and asked him about using the routine, since it made perfect sense and resonated with my magical character. He told me to practice it until it shifted from copying him into something that was "mine".
Best magical advice I ever got!! (Side note: I emailed another magician about one of his routines, and he politely requested I not use it. I have respected that. And most of my stuff is my routines from what I've purchased or read in library books, so it's not like I've got a whole show of stolen material.) Ed |

That sounds just like the thing I was looking for. The trick is for everyone but the routine is what makes it special I guess. A really good advice. That is something I will do if I ever feel comfortable of doing the trick for anyone else but for my own amusement (that is ask the magician performing it). Thanks for good advice!
