Aldo Colombini's webiste (https://www.wildcolombini.com/) no more has any packet effects. Once Aldo's online shop used to have many packet effects.
Generally nowdays the demand for packet effects has dropped down considerably. Many popular packets effects have vanished, neither they are in sale or the book is out of print.. Worrying... |

I'm pretty sure there are more packet tricks available to you now than ever in the history of man.

Going through the book "Small but Deadly" by Paul Hallas, and seeing the various online market, reflects the scenario...

Motown is absolutely right. That's the only reason, sadly. Otherwise, packet are as popular as ever, imho.
There is no better freedom than choice and no better choice than freedom.

Cameron Francis worked closely with Aldo in the years before he passed. Check out his website. His booklets contain many packet tricks and he acknowledges much influence from Aldo.

The book, Focus, by Phil Goldstein is a good resource for packet tricks.

If packet tricks are going slightly out of fashion/out of demand, then great. It means my set will look a bit different to others because I nearly always include one! (I have one or two favourites & always have a third that I'm working on at home to work in at some point in the future.)
I am not greatly interested in what is fasionable with magicians really - I only care about, powerful, direct effects believing that this is what spectators like the most. If a routine has built-in interactivity (or if you can add it) then that is likely to make the impact of the effect even greater. Looking at what magicians like and seems to be in vogue right now a fairly long standing example seems to be 'card at any number'. Personally this doesn't do that much for me, likewise oil and water effects. I'm sure the public do not DISlike them, but think there are other things that they will like BETTER. Just my opinion, I'm sure they work great for some workers. Some things that are keeping up to date with the modern world have merit if the effect is powerful and direct (rather than a vehicle to show off someone's sleight of hand)... I'm thinking here of routines with mobile phones for example. Some of these that I have seen are great. This in my view is not so much about being 'fashionable' but performing magic with objects that the public relate to. Give me a great packet trick to intersperse with any classic whole deck routine (and/or anything from repertoires of some of the top creative guys in magic such as Sankey/Sanders/Jay etc.... as long as it isn't a ACAAN, Oil on Water routine! Again, just my opinion...)

I'm not convinced that packet tricks are a good idea, guys. Isn't the point of a deck of cards that it is an everyday object? People aren't really familiar with small groups of cards that are outside of a deck.

Not sure if serius......? When people play cards they have to hold small groups of cards away from the entire deck all the time......

It's the fault of the computer. Today, anyone with a computer and printer can print out playing cards with any designs. Here are some examples of "Do-It-Yourself" packet tricks:
In Qua-Fiki's Corner, on the Magic Nook, you'll find Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki's "Go Fish Card Tricks" - packet tricks (not only for close-up use, but using jumbo cards for stage). In Magicbob's collection of "I Hate Card Tricks" books, playing cards take on the qualities of stage illusions. In The Wizards' Journals you'll find a "Pocket Packet Version of The Three Little Pigs" (Wiz J #16), Qua-Fiki's "Matrix Mix" (Wiz J #23) combines a coin matrix with a card packet trick, Qua-Fiki's "Bunny Business" series of Bunny Packet Tricks (Wiz J #25), Qua-Fiki's "Avenger Monte and Frolic" (Wiz J #29)shows you how to legally use commercial themed cards and turn them into packet tricks. In Book 4 of the Mini-Mysteries Magic series, I show you a new take on Michael Close's 1980 packet trick "Close's Clones" (with his permission, of course!) that I renamed "Clown Clones" which can be printed in close-up size to super jumbo stage size. Blame it all on the computer and it's evil companion, the color photograph quality printer.

I think Peter Pelikaan would strongly disagree with the subject of this topic.
He only invents packet tricks and makes a living doing so. Check out one of his latest off the wall creations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-yt_F7l-_I |
