So I chanced upon Greg Gleason's pictures of his updated Zig Zag.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=.......&type=3 and https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=.......&type=3 I think he has made one of the best Zig Zag artwork ever. Greg did a similar thing with his Cutting Edge illusion and I thought that was really brilliant! And this one with the ZZ has opened the world to more possibilities of putting pictures of a real life dancer on the prop. I don't know what's next? Spiker maybe? Cube Zag? Anyway, I just thought I'd share this because this is a really clever touch to magic. The pictures are on his Facebook, I am not sure if everyone can see it as it is not public. |

I always feel the picture of the lady should lean to the other side as the standard picture tips as to how the assistant is positioned in the box!?

Will post up mine one day when I am ready with it. I have just purchased a John Gaughan ZZ and will be having it in my workshop soon. |

Chew, don't be so quick to jump at statements made by members. Using logic, if the woman's left foot of up in the cutout, the body has to be positioned as it is. Otherwise, she would be off balance.
Swann101, is making his comments because he knows how the illusion works. He is looking through the eyes of a magician and not as a spectator in the audience with know knowledge of what it is even called. |

Bill, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I have to admit that I am very very new in this and have only once seen a ZZ close up for 15 minutes. I have not gotten the liberty to study this illusion. In fact, I am getting my ZZ very soon and when I do, I will be able to see for myself and study.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge here with us. This indeed is a great place. I remember speaking with Greg Gleason a few weeks ago talking about his artwork. He did mention to me that he knew his artwork's hand was a little off. He explained that this was because he was rushing to have it completed for a TV show and he didn't had the liberty of time to do it 101% well. So this does explain the off hand thing. Anyway, I believe as we speak, he is working on mending that and getting a newer artwork done. I honestly cannot wait to see it. I was inspired by Leslie McKinney from Vegas when I first saw him perform his ZZ in the same cruise ship I was in. That was about 3 years ago. And since then, I have always wanted a ZZ. Having my chat with Greg few weeks ago and him teaching me how to he did his artwork, that was the final straw I needed to decide to buy myself a ZZ. Good news is, I will be getting mine at my workshop in a few days time yay! |

Chew, Here is my wife at time doing a publicity video for a local LA, California television station for the Magic Convention we attended. That is Jim Summers, who made the 1st Harbin Zig-Zag in the U.S. How he got the plans and made this before Harbin released his book is still a mystery. I believe Summers Claimed it was his design and made no mention of Harbin. Thus, it created a big uproar in the Magic community at the time, in magic magazines. This was 1969, this is the original design as well on the prop. It was made to break down completely, making it easy for travel. Jim Summers assistant did not make the trip, she was much taller then my 5'1" wife at the time. Therefore, she developed some bruising on there leg and torso.

Bill, thank you for another info on the ZZ. I have watched on EMC conference on Mike Caveny giving a 20 minutes talk about the scandal behind this illusion during the Harbin times. It was a very detailed and insightful look into the birth of this illusion that withstood the ages.
And who today owns the 1st Jim Summers built ZZ in the US? And is Jim Summers the one that builds the Compressed illusion? |

I received a message from Greg Gleason on my questions here. This was what he wrote to me and told me to post it here.
Greg Gleason - "Jim Sommers has nothing to do with the compresed, it was invented by Daniel Summers. Daniel also invented and built with me the first Cutting Edge illusion. Dan has also released instant babe and Fowl Play. He is a very respected builder in and creator in the US. He is also featured in this months Magic Magazine. (could you post this on Magic Café for me, I am not a member of it)" So yes, I got my question answered. Thanks, Greg! |
