Paypal can be a good way to go. It is easy to set up an account, and easy to get your money out.
I have a PayPal Debit Card that allows me ot spend/take money directly out of my PayPal Account without transferring it to my regular bank account - which can take 3-5 days. If you are going to have people goto PayPal, and enter your email addess, and send money, it coupldnt be much easier. But if you are selling something online and have a web page that posts directly to Paypal, and then the product is immediately accessible/downloadable right after they pay for it, there is a BIG TIME security issue with PayPal, that lets someone just look at the name of the page where the successful transaction goes, and then just go there directly - downloading something they didnt pay for. You can get around this issue a couple of ways, use a .NET Control that hides the pertinent info. Or write server side code to check the referrer string when your success page gets called to be sure they came from paypal. But these solutions are not for the faint of heart, you have better be a die hard developer , or know one, to use these solutions. But if you arent going to rely on them getting to the success page (but rather you are going to wait for the confirming email from paypal) then it isnt a problem. AnNd it is drop dead easy to put the code into your web page. All in all, it is a pretty good solution as long as you dont fall into the problem I Mentioed above. BroDavid

Incidentally, if you get set up with PayPal and want to give it a test run, feel free to send me some money.
Always glad to help. CW |

I sell a couple of books (real ones, not e-books), and I don't make them available through dealers. So PayPal has been a major source of revenue for me (probably 2/3 of my sales), and I've never had any trouble with the system. I recommend it.

I've also been using PayPal for a long time. Buying and selling---it's much easier than writing checks or going to the Post Office for a money order.
I haven't had any problems with PayPal. |

As a consumer, I prefer using Paypal over other payment methods for internet shopping. It definitely factors into which online stores I shop at, and I would imagine I'm not the only one for whom that is true...

For those who want to release e-books etc through their website, I'm tempted to licence the software that Andy and I will be using on our website. It will remove all of the apparent "security holes" that PayPal has when dealing with e-books and do a whole bunch of other, useful things for PayPal users of this type.
If you're interested, let me know as like I say, I'm strongly considering releasing it and I'm sure I can work out a pretty good deal for Cafe members. --Andi

I never put my 16 digit credit card number on the internet. The hackers have penetrated the Pentagon and the NSA: do you think they would have any trouble getting your number because you use some lame Paypal. Better safe than sorry; as a magician I have a lot of knowledge about deceit. At least I do it without robbing people.

Seriously, According to the Federal Trade Commission, your liability for unauthorized charges is limited to $50. So you're far better off risking your credit cards online than you are using a debit card or electronic check. It's not perfect, but it does offer the online consumer some peace of mind. Unfortunately, when it comes to this sort of thievery, the old methods are usually the most successful. It's far easier for someone to dig an old style reciept carbon or credit statement out of the trash to have access to that information than it would be to hack Paypal. |

Oft times, internet transactions using a CC are more secure than using your card at local restaurant or retail store.

I have a PhD in computer science, so I am well aware of the possibilities (and methodologies) for capturing credit card numbers electronically. Believe me, if I wanted a bunch of credit card numbers, I would just give $50 to a waiter and have him copy down the next 20 numbers he handles! ... Doug

I have used Paypal for years and have had only one incorrect transaction which was immediately corrected once they were notified.

I haven been using PayPal since 2005, and back then they weren't very reliable. I had had a transaction reversed because of the buyer's fault, and the PayPal's customer service wasn't very helpful.
Since eBay has acquired PayPal for a long time now, they've become more and more reliable. The majority of online stores now all use PayPal. I actually never have an issue with them for a while now. |
