Here is footage I just uploaded from last nights gig at The Magic Roundabout. I've always like cups & balls which is great for street, but for table magic chop cup is the way to go.
The first chop routine I ever read, you started out with both balls already in the cup, I never liked that. So I start out with the un-gimmicked ball and some cup moves, then start using the chop feature later. Please critic my routine and loads! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtlinMWy7e4 |

Hi Joe
Its hard to critique the routine from that camera angle, but the main thing was that the audience seemed to really enjoy it. A couple of points for me - I would normally not do as any phases, but then again if you have the right audience and conditions.. The second load (from the camera angle) flashed a bit. Some other thoughts - When I do a chop cup routine, for the first phase, I use the pinkie to retain the ball when I roll it out of the cup. This move can also be done strolling/in the hands. The pinkie can be used to lift a cup of the table while retaining an un-gaffed ball so it appears to be empty (and you always control the outcome). Apart from the 'classics' such as Paul Daniels, Don Alan, I also quite like aspects on Dan Tong's routine (colour change ball) and Mark James's rapid fire routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwghf0qnOwo Charlie |

I would agree that there seem to be too many guessing phases, and the "Where is the ball?" presentation is my least favorite. I thought the first load of the cup was a little rough.
I agree Mark James has a really good routine, which is fast paced and has a variety of effects. I think this pace helps divert from spectators catching onto the chop method. I feel the real strength of this routine is the loads. I was expecting a load from the left pocket and I missed it--on camera. The second load was also strong. I like that you avoid the load from the pocket --if the hand repeatedly goes from the pocket to the cup, it's not too difficult to guess that the load came out of the pocket, even if its appearance was initially a surprise. |

Thanks guys.
I don't get why this camera angle makes it hard to critique? Puggo I do intend to put some new moves in and I have used the pinky move before. But I like them to get it right once or twice, it lowers their guard befor the final loads. Also as you said the audience seems to be into it, I don't always go that long on the 'cup or pocket part', you can hear the woman scream with laughter on the third or forth guess. I will look into Mark James' work. I don't like the idea of the ball changing colour, leads them to think there might be more than one ball. That's something that I want to avoid and have put subtle things in my routine to avoid that. I have not had anyone guess that method for a long time! I know some magicians reveal that before the final load, but I think it cheapens the effect. |

Felt a little long to me also, but then I think those who know the load is coming are impatient for the climax. I think your video has shown that the ending can be even stronger if they're playing along and engaged beforehand.

I think Landmark is right, you guys know what is coming so the effect seems 'longer'.
I feel people really enjoy the guessing part and letting them get it right a few times, really 'leads them down the garden path'. Here is some more footage from the same venue. It think it illustrates my point of view perfectly. Watch them go from 'we will always get it right now!' to blown away, just check the guys face closely leaden up to the end. He goes through about 5 emotions. The woman is just enjoying herself! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhWzzITSfpc |

I listened to you guys and adjusted the routine slightly. Mainly on smoothing out that last load, as the lemon is bigger its a but harder. Which is why before I did the first and second load differently.
Here is footage from last weeks gig, daylight footage from the front angle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEY1JUxTc9w |
