Hello Café, I'm about to start table hopping soon for the first time, and I wanted your advice on my table hopping sets. I'm doing the 3 sets of 3 effects suggestion by Jamie D. Grant.
At the end of each set I utilize Mystery Smoke. (Nesting Wallets, vanishing the coin. Inferno, bringing out the matchbox. Phantom Deck, when the whole deck turns clear) 1) Triad Coins, Serial Killer Pro, Super Soft Nesting Wallets 2) Sponge Rabbits, Powerball 60, Inferno 3) Boon Writer (number prediction), Prism Deck, Phantom Deck Tell me what you think! |

That seems like a lot of stuff to carry. If you are just getting started, you may find out that pocket space is at a premium. I think you'll be much better served by 1 prop that you can do several things with. I typically do 3 hours with 1 regular deck, 1 gaffed deck, card to wallet, and a few coins in a purse.

Your suits gonna be quiet bulgy with all that stuff in it, not to mention the smoke hookup.
I'd eliminate Powerball 60 (too long for strolling imho), Inferno, Killer Elite Pro (requires table space) and the Phantom deck (an unnecessary kicker after the prism deck) Create one set out of the above and work that. My suggestion: 1 Sponge Rabbits 2 Triad Coins (I'd replace this with Roths Coins Across) 3 Boon Writer (use to determine the amount of money in someones wallet to link back to previous routine) 4 Prism Deck 5 Nesting Wallets (use ring vanish) |

By your third table you are most likely far enough away so you can go to the next table and do your first one again. It's just a way so everyone doesn't see the same thing. EDIT: And, surprisingly, a lot of the things that are here are very slim and there are little bulges in my suit. |

Why are you asking questing, then telling people no?
I mean you are going to do 3 tricks and use 2 different decks of cards? Why not take the time to build a skill set instead of a prop drawyer?

Well, Danny and Peppermeat!
It appears, to me at least, that, having spent a bunch of cash for those props, he feels that he must use them! He, also apparently, has never heard of S.H. Sharpe! I suspect that the OP is a "magic shop magician"! For the OP's information, I will quote Mr. Sharpe's well known (to those who have been "around' for awhile) statement" "THOSE WHO THINK THAT MAGIC CONSISTS OF DOING TRICKS, ARE STRANGERS TO MAGIC. TRICKS ARE ONLY THE CRUDE RESIDUE FROM WHICH THE LIFEBLOOD OF MAGIC HAS BEEN DRAINED." At no 'additional charge", I will throw in, Dariel Fitzkee's statement (in "The Trick Brain", pp 308-309): "I must insist that tricks are but tools. This eagerness to add new tools to the workshop, at the expense of learning how to use the tools we already possess, definitely results in overcrowded workshops, but unskilled artisans." The PRO thinks "SHOW", not, "TRICKS". Eventually, the OP, if he survives, may realize that: "It'a the PERFORMER, NOT THE PROP"!

Thanks for the advice all. I'll try to have fewer things in my sets. I have 2 decks because I love having deck switches, and this has always been the kicker that makes people scream. I know it's an extra prop, but it's worth it if it adds to the magical effect.

Yea guess you haven't been reading huh? Oh well since you have your answers and your truth it makes one wonder why you bothered to ask at all?
Good luck with it. By the way while when a suit is new all may very well lay flat, the edges of the pockets from being in and out well wear very quickly. If you do not dry clean it often it happens even faster. Then things do not sit well and it looks horrible. Suit coat pockets generally come sewn shut. They are mostly decorative except for the inner pockets. So while things are new yep it may look ok. But it died not take too long for it to get very frumpy very quickly.

I think you need more stuff and you should also have a backup smoke device in case the main one fails or runs out.
Better to be armed to the teeth and not use everything than not have enough stuff. 3 sets of 3. Really, Is that enough? I don't walk out of the house without AT LEAST 6 sets of 6. I also carry an extra 6 just because of my name. Although recently, I've been entertaining at festivals with just a deck of cards, a coin board, 2 sponge balls, a paddle and a chop cup. I can get over five minutes with one card trick that has a chosen card becoming reversed in the deck. The deck is a standard Bicycle deck. It's amazing the amount of material packed into that thing. When you start the gig, try going out one night with just a deck of cards. Okay, maybe ONE other thing. Unless you really don't think you can do it. Lack of confidence is a killer. It could lose you the gig. It could be an epiphany. It could be nonsense. It could have you stepping out as an entertainer and shifting the focus from just the props....to you. It could be a bunch of BS. Yeah, pack your pockets and go out "full metal jacket."

If you are just starting your strolling career, here's 2 bits of advice that no one told me and I think is VERY important.
#1 You need to know how to think on your feet. I think this is THE most important part of being a strolling magician. Occasionally, things will go wrong. Someone will forget the card, demand on examining something that can't be examined, "I've seen this one before," Food will come in the middle of a trick, someone will drop your deck in gravy. These are all things that I have had happen to me over the last 15 years and I may not have thought of how to handle it before...but I know how to handle it now. #2 You are NOT a magician, you are an ambassador for the restaurant. You are not the star, the restaurant is the star. Be well versed in the menu, ask if they've been here before, what they ordered. Oh, and in choosing your material, have a few things you keep aside for a special occasion.....birthday, anniversary, if a local celebrity comes in, someone tips you really big and wants an encore. RESIST the urge to do it at every table. SAVE IT! |

What Pepka said. One other thing, keep notes. What went over, what bombed. Don't fall in love with the tricks, your routines, or your lines. If they're not going over, get rid of them. you have enough to open a magic shop. (We pretty much all do.)

For example it is not too long before you stop calling it stuff like "the dark arts".
