At the most you only need 2 sets and 1 encore trick. Any more is ridiculous and just taking up space.
now it depends what type of restaurant and what type of close up work you'll be doing. Those sets sound great if you're dealing with adults only. assuming that is the case. your tricks and sets should meet this criteria : Spectator can describe each effect in one sentence, It's okay to have longer effects for shows but with walk a round the food can come or at a corporate the CEO can walk in at any second so the routines also need to be modular and you need to be ready to end and move on at any moment. Instant reset. That's a big one. To reset an entire set should take no longer than 20 seconds. You're there to perform not to fiddle with your crap so organization is key. Be friendly, get to know the people before you wip out your cards and say I'm a magician. I usually talk with them, make sure the food and everything is okay and only then do I start the show. If anything is out of order you need to make it your job to find someone who can fix it if you can't fix it yourself. Almost daily at my restaurant gig cutlery is dropped or drinks are spilled. I replace the cutlery and I'll get napkins. my kids set is sponge balls, vanishing silk, extreme burn, or david williamsons famous 3 card trick. My basic adult set is extreme burn, crazy mans hand cuffs, ring box (david stone), 2 card monte and end with culligula triumph or david williamsons TNR. For my restaurant gig I have a new trick every week for the regulars (kids) and back up sets to both. I find any gimmick deck besides the invisible deck just a pain carry. Finally don't do 2 different gimmicked deck tricks in one set. People will realize it's obviously a gimmicked deck if you change just for the trick. I've been very fortunate to do a lot of close-up walk a round for adults and I'm now jaded if you can't tell. lol Best of luck. |

Great insights! Thanks for sharing!
On a curious note; any reason you don't do ambitious card? Or sponge bunnies? |

I have creative patter I'm very fond of for my sponge balls. lol
I carry one sponge bunny to sometimes do chris capeharts sponge ball routine. the kid has to follow the red ball and not the bunny but the kid loses track and they ends up with the ball and the bunny in their hand. I only do my ACR for kids now. I kind of out grew it. I like card tricks that have a solid beginning, middle and end in the presentation and that can give a deeper and artistic look at me and my magic rather than the superficial trick after trick card tricks. Presentation over effect... always. Not saying that can't be done with ACR. Just after more than a decadeof doing it professionally I realized I had so much other better material that I had no need for it anymore. All of my card tricks are impromptu done with a normal deck besides TNR. I carry one deck with me and I use The any card to any wallet as a hold out device for the duplicates that I can retrieve at any moment I want to perform it. |

Wow those were some great reaponses. You probably won't need 3 sets of three table hopping at first. You will want to do the same set for every table for their first time. Then the second when they return and so forth. Some even have child and adult sets. This will help you keep track of what magic you have done for people. Ohh you've been here before and seen me, then you know what to go into. Check out this blog and dig. It's got some gold

If you are doing effects that change, as in different cards selected, it's not a problem to do the same trick for different tables. How about 3 sets of 3 with just three props? I generally have one packet trick wallet that I use for two effects, two mostly regular deck of cards (I generally only use on), a few coins including a TUC, rubber bands, and something mental.

Okay EVILDAN, I know your comment is just about a year old, but I'm reading it for the first time now and that was pretty funny.

"How do you like my set" threads are becoming the new "What are your top 5" threads.
Sets? If you're great, they're great. If you're good, they're good. If you're awful, they're awful. That's how I like your sets!!!

I'm definitely not angry. I was just trying to be as plain as possible.
i honestly think it's better advice to tell someone that their list of tricks is essentially meaningless to discuss, rather than politely give nonsense advice about a group of tricks done by someone we've never seen. it gives them something new to think about. if they had more experience they would know not to ask that question. it's like asking... "how do you like the list of ingredients for my spaghetti recipe"? how am I supposed to know unless you describe the entire cooking process and/or make it for me and I actually taste it. a list of ingredients tells me almost nothing. spaghetti made with the same list of ingredients can be: great, good, awful.

But I don't think it is unreasonable to ask "here are some tricks I am considering - what do you think?". Yes, there are way more important things to consider around being entertaining, but I also don't think it is an unreasonable question in my opinion. One of the most important things an aspiring MLB prospect would need to worry about is hitting a good curve ball or a good slider, but it also wouldn't be crazy if he asked about what cleats someone prefers. I don't post much but your posts have probably had more influence on me than anyone else around here, so I only post this with the utmost respect. |
